Johannesburg - Popcru in Limpopo expressed concern on Thursday at the impact a lack of traffic fine books is having on the Polokwane traffic department.

"[Our members] at the department have been directed to refrain from all law enforcement activities in the province's biggest city... due to a lack of stationery," the Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union (Popcru) said in a statement.

Popcru claimed the officers were informed of the shortage on Monday.

The union said some of its members were willing to resume their duties despite the shortage, but the department's management "won't have any of it".

"The fear of the concerned officers is that the city will become lawless during their absence from the roads. This is purely due to mismanagement at the centre, which falls under one of the five departments under administration in the province."

The union called on the department to resolve the matter and send officers back to their posts.

The Polokwane traffic department could not immediately be reached for comment.
