Pricey tables for ANC gala dinner

2012-08-16 13:03

Johannesburg - Politicians and guests will have to pay R5 000 a table to attend an ANC centenary dinner, according to a report on Thursday.

The Star newspaper reported that the event, hosted by the Liliesleaf Farm ANC branch in Midrand, would take place next Saturday and that Human Settlements Minister Tokyo Sexwale would be the main speaker.

Branch chairperson Luther Lebelo said the dinner was dedicated to the 49th anniversary of the Rivonia Trial at which leaders of the struggle were convicted of acts of sabotage aimed at overthrowing the government and sentenced to life imprisonment.

It was named the Rivonia Trial after the suburb of Rivonia, home to the ANC's headquarters at Liliesleaf and where 19 ANC leaders were arrested.

Lebelo said Sexwale would discuss the issue of unity in the party and lessons to be learnt from the Rivonia Trial.

Protea Hotel manager Tania Malan told the newspaper more than 100 guests had confirmed their attendance.

Lebelo said only 40 tables were still available. He said the money raised would be used to run the branch.

Do you mean that the attendees will be using tax payers money to pay for the tables? Im sure SCOPA would pick up on that...I hope they will. I would like to see who the attendees are though.

Ah - did I recall a statement no more fancy dinners just last week - of course that was only hot air. Soon our overweight, corrupt and hot air-blowing ANC politicians need to be transported by forklift!

That is scary. Why don't they use the money wisely, i.e. feed the poor, house homeless people, something positive, not lining their pockets and have another party, when there are people going hungry!!!!

I thought this is quite funny: The old farmer said, 'Well, ya know, Zuma is a "Post Turtle''. Not being familiar with the term, the doctor asked him, what a 'post turtle' was. The old farmer said, 'When you're driving down a country road and you come across a fence post with a turtle balanced on top, that's a 'Post turtle'. The old farmer saw the puzzled look on the doctor's face so he continued to explain. "You know he didn't get up there by himself, he doesn't belong up there, he doesn't know what to do while he's up there, he's elevated beyond his ability to function, and you just wonder what kind of dumb ass put him up there to begin with."

Perhaps the MC should include this joke in his repertoire for the occasion.

"They must eat cake..."...yeah right. R500 000 down the drain...to talk and talk and talk and talk and stuff yourself with food and wine and more food whilst Rome is burning. Please leave a few CRUMBS for the homeless on the street. Reading this really spoiled my day now.
