Probe MEC 'blue light' assault - DA

2012-07-23 19:41

Johannesburg - The DA has called for a probe into allegations that a Mpumalanga man was assaulted by bodyguards of the province's housing MEC.

"[Mpumalanga] Premier David Mabuza must investigate the allegations against Human Settlements MEC Siphosezwe Masango and his 'blue light bully'," Democratic Alliance MPL Anthony Benadie said in a statement on Monday.

The DA also advised the premier to relieve the MEC of his duties.

"The premier [should] suspend Masango from all official duties until the SAPS have concluded their investigation, and depending on the outcome thereof to release MEC Masango from duty," said Benadie.

The man who was allegedly assaulted, Gert van der Merwe, 38, told Beeld newspaper that Masango's white Mercedes-Benz with flashing blue lights sped past cars waiting to pass through a tollgate on Thursday morning.

"The car passed oncoming traffic at high speed crossing over a solid line," he told the newspaper.

Van der Merwe apparently stopped behind Masango at the tollgate and shouted that the driver was reckless. He said Masango's car stopped when the boom closed in front of his car.

"When I wanted to pay, I saw the driver and another man get out of the car. They walked to my car and shouted: 'What is your problem?'," Van der Merwe told the newspaper.

One of the guards had a pistol in his hand and the other had pepper spray.

Van der Merwe said he got out of his car to confront the pair, at which time a third person, believed to be Masango, also got out of the vehicle.

Van der Merwe was allegedly hit on the head and pepper-sprayed.

He reportedly ran towards the Kaapmuiden police station, about 400m from the tollgate. The bodyguards ran after him.

Beeld published a picture of Van der Merwe running with two men behind him.

Incidents involving blue light brigades have made headlines in the past year.

A bodyguard for KwaZulu-Natal's former Social Development MEC Meshack Radebe was found guilty of illegally discharging his firearm and his colleague was found guilty of negligent driving earlier this month.

The bodyguard shot the tyre of a Mazda near Camperdown, resulting in the driver losing control and colliding head-on with a bakkie. Eight people were injured in the accident in 2008.

The driver of former Gauteng local government MEC Humphrey Mmemezi's VIP vehicle allegedly knocked West Rand teenager Thomas Ferreira off his motorbike.

The November 2011 accident left Ferreira comatose, brain-damaged and in need of long-term rehabilitation.

The DA said it has abolished the use of blue lights for MECs and cabinet members in the Western Cape and had called on Mabuza to do the same in his province.

Corruption, Crime, Abuse of Power, Education, Medical, Xenophobia. All basic human rights violations on the worst levels and our so calle dgovernment with its worlds best constitution cannot even get to first base in how to run a country after 20 years. Even worse, the rest of the world has turned a blind eye on us and forgotten we even exist. This country is doomed to become that land in all the disaster and horror movies normally only of fiction. Leave the Cadres alone DA. They are above the law and mere mortal South Africans. It is their right to speed and intimidate law abiding citizens on public roads. They have been elected to rule and not serve. So please DA, stay quiet and mind your own province!

      tw2066 - 2012-07-24 06:51

LOL - Yeah the Cadres certainly see life from a different angle, One wonders if they - and some of the suppottas - actually believe the ANC is that immortal putty etc all that cr@p that showerkop spews??

If suspended would it be on full pay? Why do these public servants need drivers and body guards? Are they so useless they cannot even drive themselves to work or engagements. What makes them so grand? Why do they need bodyguards? For protection from those they are supposed to serve, but do not? The British prime minister rides a bicycle to work, as does London's Mayor. These twits think way too much of themselves. Our top heavy greedy corrupt government needs a serious shake up.

@ Bless, I think it is a status thing. They puff themselves out to look bigger and more important than they actually are. As far as they are concerned they are entitled to special treatment.

  • Amanda - 2012-07-23 20:47

Gert, take this rotten CANCer Government to the cleaners. Sue them for assault, reckless driving, endangering the lives of road users. The rot has got to stop now with the Blue Light Brigade. Get the best lawyers you can and hit them where it hurts most - in their pockets.

  • freddy.vanwijk - 2012-07-23 20:53

Blue light operators, be warned you have just unleashed "hell on earth". May innocent motorists have mercy on your souls.

  • Amanda - 2012-07-23 21:13

@ craig, what Nasty Khumo means is that the Blue Light Brigade is targeting whites and any other minority group - deliberately.

  • Amanda - 2012-07-23 21:18

Hey Khumo - come to the Western Cape and see if you can sort us out with your Blue Light Brigades. The Coloureds will moere you. Less pink oues here boet.

  • tw2066 - 2012-07-24 06:59

Could you imagone if the ASSAULTER was vd Merwe and the ASSAULTEE was Masango? A whole pack of -- no no, a container load == of race cards would be thrown about. The use of settler, boeremag, colonialist would be the order of the day, and the white folk would once again have to tip toe around for a few months. But when the opposite applies - its oh well toughies. And if anyone dares to speak out on this ..... well the usual insults are hurled. Sorry if I have offended any AA or BBBEE candidates...aw forget it, you would never understand.
