Bloemfontein - Public Protector Thuli Madonsela will investigate the Free State government's controversial multi-million rand website, the DA said on Monday.

The Democratic Alliance had received confirmation from the protector’s good governance and integrity office that it would investigate a complaint by the party, said Free State DA leader Patricia Kopane.

She said the party had laid a complaint of wasteful expenditure in respect of Premier Ace Magashule’s website for the Free State government, which allegedly cost R140m.

"The DA requested an executive ethics code investigation into possible violations by Magashule," said Kopane.

She accused the premier of violating the code in his awarding of the contract for the website's construction.
