RDP housing promises false

2010-01-31 21:20

Johannesburg - Gauteng housing councillors were giving false hope to those seeking RDP housing, the local government department said on Sunday.

It had been inundated with phone calls from people claiming that Gauteng councillors were advising them to submit forms for immediate allocation of housing, MEC Kgaogelo Lekgoro said in a statement.

The allocation of RDP houses is the department's duty and not that of local councillors, he said, accusing the councillors of confusing the public.

Lekgoro said he was aware that people were desperate for houses.

Measures in place to make the allocation of houses more efficient included the creation of a demand database to capture beneficiaries' details, he said.

The department had also opened five regional offices so people would not have to travel long distances to Johannesburg.
