Johannesburg - DA leader Helen Zille has described the party's ill-fated agreement with Agang SA leader Mamphela Ramphele as a "calculated risk".

Speaking at a media conference in Johannesburg on Monday morning, Zille said sometimes risks work and sometimes they don't, and in this case the DA will cut its losses and move on.

"It was a genuine and good faith attempt to bring together a strong and united opposition force that could build a new future for South Africa."

Zille stated that she and Ramphele had come to an agreement before last Tuesday's media conference, but on the morning of the conference it seemed Ramphele had decided she would remain Agang SA leader.

Zille said she told Ramphele this was an "electoral nonsense" as she could not remain the leader of one party and run as presidential candidate of another.

More to follow.
