Regions want ANC North West chair suspended

2012-06-06 18:30

Johannesburg - Suspending the chairperson of the ANC in the North West, Supra Mahumapelo, will be unconstitutional, the party said on Wednesday.

Spokesperson Keith Khoza said a meeting in which regions in the province had called for the suspension of Mahumapelo and four other members of the provincial executive committee was unconstitutional.

The African National Congress regions have called for the suspension of the five members of the provincial leadership.

In a statement on Wednesday, the regions said branches met in a duly constituted special provincial general council on Sunday.

"The meeting resolved to call for the immediate removal of the provincial chairperson, deputy secretary, provincial treasurer, Kenny Morolong and Matthew Wolmarans," the statement read.

The deputy provincial secretary is former local government MEC Gordon Kegakilwe, the treasurer is former Madibeng municipal manager Philemon Mapulane, Kenny Morolong is the provincial spokesman and Wolmarans is the former mayor of Rustenburg.

The regions also requested an urgent provincial general council to elect people to the vacant positions in the provincial executive committee.

The regions said factionalism and disunity in the provincial executive committee and its inability to provide political and organisational leadership in the province continued to derail the national executive committee (NEC)'s efforts to stabilise the province.

The statement, signed by the chairperson of Ngaka - Modiri Molema, Dr Kenneth Kauda and Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati - claimed that branches had gathered at a special provincial general council to defend their rights and authority.
