SA media controlled by whites: Holomisa

2012-01-31 16:38

Johannesburg - The South African media is still being controlled by a white minority who have been in power since apartheid, the United Democratic Movement (UDM) said on Tuesday.

"One cannot shy away from the fact that the South African media is still heavily influenced by those who had been given power during apartheid," UDM leader Bantu Holomisa said during a presentation to the Press Freedom Commission's (PFC) public hearings in Johannesburg.

"Almost two decades into our democratic dispensation, the South African media remains in the tight control of a minority group that has deluded itself into thinking it has the power to dictate the nation's thought processes."

Holomisa said the UDM was concerned about the "biased and subjective" decisions made by editors and journalists on what was worth reporting on.

"They brand most stories which originate from opposition parties as un-newsworthy.

"The irony is that the very same journalists who refuse to cover certain political parties later joined government as its spokespersons."

Holomisa said the media had a critical role to play in exposing the "wrongdoings" of public officials.

"If it were not for the media, we would all be blissfully unaware that we are being fleeced.

"We cannot support any attempts to suppress such scandals, and the regulation of the media should not be abused as a tool to stop the truth from getting out."

I wish these politicians would get over themselves! I am sick and tired of hearing about the nasty minority hogging all the toys in the playroom. Wahhh Wahhh says the politician. Please pass him a hankie...

      Jack - 2012-02-02 01:37

look, let's be honest - the media in SA is privately owned and depends largely on advertising (you didn't pay to use this site). Most advertising is done by big business, hence the fact that our media tends to have a political slant to the right. I do however wish that we could get past this whole race issue. Everyone can now vote and the struggle, if there is any such thing, is now a class struggle. Let's stop living in the past and recognize the present...

      Jacqueline - 2012-02-02 08:49

If the media was largely owned and operated by a white minority, the prospected new head of the SABC would have matric, a degree in business, media and/or marketing.

      Ronald - 2012-02-02 09:15

If Holomisa went to the trouble of doing his research he would find that many of the large media groups have a majority BEE or black shareholding. I was quite surprised to find that even some traditionally white Afrikaans newspapers are included in this. So, Holomisa, once again it shows that there is no replacement for EDUCATION( read self-education or google before opening your mouth).

      Hugh - 2012-02-02 11:32

@Ronald, problem is, you cant un-ring a bell, even it its a false alarm.

  • chris.s.vangraan - 2012-01-31 16:49

can people please get over their insecurity and stop blaming whites for everything?

      Lorenzo - 2012-02-02 16:36

If SA media wasnt majority white owned, we'd have 150 channels on DSTV all as brilliant ETV or SABC 1 (Sarcasm)...

  • John - 2012-01-31 16:49

Let's objectively discuss the media, News24 for instance tends to only push stories that tarnish the image of SA. If you go to the US or OZ the media stands its teams even after they have been trashed in SA the media only cares about itself and is unpatriotic, lets seriously discuss the media....btw we really don't need pollies in this discussion...

      Godfrey - 2012-01-31 17:08

Well stop whining and start you own equivalent of news24.

      John - 2012-01-31 21:12

Godfrey no one is whining mate just calling a spade a spade, patriotism is one embodiment that the SA media does no subscribe to,

      modmario - 2012-02-01 08:01

Lol John, South Africa does not know what patriotism is. Our mixed cultures keep clashing, singing we've got the spirit yes we do, we've got the spirit how about you. So there is no culmination, of a singular ideal, just the celebration of separate cultures that makes for a watered down bitterness. But at least I still like my braai in mediocrity. Nobody will know what I mean unless they've visited a museum in London, Spain, Reykjavik, or where ever. Or enjoyed a sandwich on a park bench in a bustling city like New York without the fear of getting mugged... which I have on numerous occasions in South Africa..... Awe well Afrikaners is plesierig....

      Derek - 2012-02-01 08:57

The truth hurts doesn't it! Someone has to tell the stories of rampant crime, fraud, corruption and embezzlement on a grand scale. Imagine if this wasn't brought into the public domain! Thank goodness for our press reporting as they do irrespective of the colour of the owners and editors (yes many are black, so sick of hard working white people who make such a difference continually being targeted with that nauseating buzz word 'transformation' continually thrown around)

      Zebelon - 2012-02-01 18:41

Correction: News 24 tends to push stories that tarnish the imageOf WRONG DOERS ( incidentally, we don't split the verb "to be" and the main verb ).

  • braamc - 2012-01-31 16:49

    Who is Holomisa?

      Jano - 2012-01-31 16:55

don't worry no body important! Just ignore this whole article.

      Sheik - 2012-01-31 18:02

He must remember the white hand that helped him in his puppet state of Transkei. Now biting the hand that kept him in power.

      Thozi - 2012-01-31 23:14

Good question, but sorry, I don't know.

      Mike - 2012-02-01 15:21

He is the same who the "Whites" put into power to "rule" the Republic of Transkei, after a military coup. Isn't that a hypocritical General Holomisa?

      Ask - 2012-02-02 03:03

Who is Holomisa? Eh.. eh.. he is a Bantu....

  • Hendrik - 2012-01-31 16:51

These 'politicians' makes statements like these based on WHAT? They cannot even GOOGLE to find out what is going on around them, so how can they run the country? If you GOOGLE, Mr. HOLO-MIS-A-LOT you will see 49% radio stations was owned by black empowerment groups in 2003. ANC must learn to GOOGLE things, do not ask you're wife, neighbour or Sangoma, they don't know.

      Paul - 2012-01-31 19:04

Yes but Hendrik you dealing with a majority that don't understand what a percent is, let alone the value it represents, Unfortunately Africans have never in 6 million years of existence have not even built a monument to anything. The entire culture is based on what someone else said, nothing is done for themselves only under the instruction of someone else. How can they motivate to do anything. As with everything speculation and half baked truths. This stems from the fact that the elite don't want their sordid history documented. The Black mind is genetically programmed to be victims of their own circumstance. The Past and white guilt are the only skills this lot have. I am so glad to see the emergence of young black South Africans that can see through the "Historical Bull" and are not prepared to pin their colours to mast and are actually making successes of themselves through hard work like the rest of us do. Who also take exception with this nonsense of talk and little action where it really needed. We need FAT CAT INTELLECTUALS NOT FAT CAT POLITICIANS. This lots only job is to stay in government as they are to useless for the private sector. Where innovators and entrepreneurs are made. We are trading one form of oppression for another. This info bill will still go ahead.

      seymour.howe - 2012-02-02 04:23

Yes, Hendrick, and one only has to listen to these radio stations, typically SAFM - try to understand what is being said by their presenters and reporters, listen to the number of apologies for "technical hitches", listen to the input from callers to understand: 1. Why the Empowered SABC is technically bankrupt 2.Why the only English Actuality program features crap such as Radio Vuka and predominantly Black topics. 3.How Black control of these stations maintains racial friction by interlacing almost every news article with racial undertones etc, etc. Our New Protection of information act, an act which has been voted into Law by the Majority Government and has been proposed in order to protect the state against "espionage" and guard "national interests".Yeeeeah, sure! To protect the Government's corrupt Cronies from being exposed rather! In terms of this act, any information that is deemed to be of "national interest" i.e Arms Purchases and all other Goverment procurement and expenditure, travel costs, security costs etc - a vague term that remains largely undefined- can be 'protected' under this bill, whether that information be a government document or files from a police investigation. And the sentence for publishing 'protected' information? 25 years in prison.Rather Murder someone and then you'll be back on the street within half that time! Mugabe controls the media in Zimbabwe and this started out with similar controls to this. Let's face it, this was on the cards from

      seymour.howe - 2012-02-02 04:33

day 1 - the fact that it's taken 18 years to get here just shows their ability to understand and comprehend. It takes an average of 25 years for a "previously disadvantaged/colonised" country to break down into a state of civil unrest - we've got a couple of years left!

      seymour.howe - 2012-02-02 04:36

and one last thing: WILL THE PERSON WHO CONTROLS THESE WEB PAGES/COMMENTS, MAKE A SLIGHT ADJUSTMENT - TURN THE COMMENTS AROUND SO THAT ALL "NEW COMMENTS" ARE AT THE TOP, NOT 5 MILES DOWN THE PAGE!

  • Willie - 2012-01-31 16:52

General we all know that you got guts. Please name this "whites" who control the media. It does not help, General to generalise.Start doing your jobs in the goverment ,the media will do it's bit. George - 2012-01-31 19:21

General you can leave south africa if you want to

  • Mark - 2012-01-31 16:52

Mr. Holomisa, you are free to find like-minded partners and start a newspaper that you think is disseminating the "correct" news. But then again, perhaps your views won't sell?

  • sewsexy - 2012-01-31 16:52

Careful Holomisa - WOW !!!! That chip on your shoulder will become a boulder !!! What a load of crap is spewing from your mouth

  • makesuthink - 2012-01-31 16:53

So the SABC is not part of the media Who controls them.

      Lizira - 2012-01-31 17:18

      Excellent point!

      Richard - 2012-01-31 18:15

agreed - yes and look at their budget....kekekeke and soccer footage - what a laugh!!!! - why why why oh so corrupt....its a disease - they could have done the 'people'proud - but oh no - greed - ag shame!!

      Sean - 2012-01-31 18:24

Bantu Holomisa - everything you and your comrades control is one big F@CK UP !

      Julio - 2012-01-31 18:38

That's right, the SABC is not owned by whites and look at what a spendid job they're doing. There's a fine example of how a broadcaster should be run.

  • Hotkop - 2012-01-31 16:55

If it was not for the media you will wake up one morning and see you are the only white man left. Rest all killed.

  • Wikus - 2012-01-31 16:55

Well he had to say SOMETHING to get into the news.

      Julio - 2012-01-31 18:40

I agree, he has been forgotten and now to make some waves he has to trash the whites. It seems that trashing whited guarantees you some media exposure. I don't think Holomisa is as stupid as people think.

  • Karmah - 2012-01-31 16:55

    Oh for Farksakes

  • Henry - 2012-01-31 16:56

Is he trying to get votes??

      Godfrey - 2012-01-31 17:09

Yep. He and the ACDP will do anything to get a bit of publicity.

  • Mia - 2012-01-31 16:56

Isn't there any beter news to give! It's always whites. Shame! Get over yourselfs!

  • Herman - 2012-01-31 16:57

    Bantu who??

      Fourhundredkg - 2012-01-31 18:13

I thought Bantu was a bad word in the new SA, like the k-word?

  • SarelJBotha - 2012-01-31 17:00

If you want black owned media, put your money in and start your own companies. if you do not want to do this, get out of the kitchen.

  • Herman - 2012-01-31 17:00

"... minority group that has deluded itself into thinking it has the power to dictate the nation's thought processes." Then, they only think they dictate the nations thought processes, but in reality they don't? So, it must be the majority that dictate the nations thought process...So, what is his point then?

      Max - 2012-01-31 17:33

Herman, you must remember that he hasn't got thoughts of his own so every time he reads something it dictates his thoughts. It is like a goldfish swimming round his bowl, every time he passes the same object it is something new to him.

  • Jos - 2012-01-31 17:01

Mr. Holomisa, since when did you notice that. Are you interested on the factual news or who owns the source of factual news? Please do not pretend as if you care about Black Empowerment (you perhaps just missed out on a BEE deal).

  • Franna16 - 2012-01-31 17:02

Excuse me. Who runs the SABC?? And look where it is heading. (I'm not saying the SABC is crashing because of race its crashing because it's in the hands of unqualified people regardless of race)

  • ivan.coetzee2 - 2012-01-31 17:02

Go ahead use you OWN money and build your OWN media enterprise, all you want is what the whites paid for out of their own money. You have the power these days whats stopping you? Thos in positions of power have done nothing except steal from other and play the sympathy card for their own gain! Piss off Holomisa you loser

  • Lenard - 2012-01-31 17:04

How many white anc spokespersons are there? Another useless oposition party leader blaming the whites for his own failure.

      Burtfred - 2012-01-31 17:19

They had a white spokesperson but he was kicked out in disgrace for being a serial liar.

      paulmandlankosi - 2012-01-31 17:49

ANC and the article, I am lost

  • Jymiro - 2012-01-31 17:05

Don't be stupid here this enquiry is about print media which is self regulated. Holomisa is 100% right that white minority controls the print media and the agenda that it is serving is for that section. I however do subscribe to the independence of the media.

      Theo - 2012-02-01 09:10

Where does the article single out print media? Also, you can't have independent media and regulate it at the same time...

  • edan.suricate - 2012-01-31 17:06

OMG will these pathetic losers ever be able to lead by skill and ability rather than the whites are the reason I am an insignificant useless? Thank God the majority of black men are not like this, in fact they laugh at the losers themselves.

  • Shirley - 2012-01-31 17:07

Yeah right and Im concerned about the "biased and subjective views" taken by government! As for the media"exposing wrong doings" take that up with the insecure @sses who passed the info bill. If organisations cannot meet the criteria required they must stop blaming whites and ADMIT their failures!

  • Andre - 2012-01-31 17:09

Everything else is controlled by blacks. So what? Racist!!

  • Cracker - 2012-01-31 17:11

The chairperson(s) at these public hearings are failing the country. They simply allow representations based on generalizations (OK, general it will then be) allegations. We need examples - plenty, not just the one or two politicians are so fond of recounting and then think they have bluffed us, especially on radio stations. An appendix to their submissions in which they justify their claims must be demanded so the allegations can be checked. We must not allow the politicians to any more BS us.

  • Con - 2012-01-31 17:13

There are some serious contradictions here : his complaint is that the media is still controlled by those who were in control during apartheid. Yet, he complains that the media favours the present government over opposition. Then, he contradicts that by saying that if it were not for the media, we would not be aware of all the wrongdoings. Bantu confused much ?

      Piet - 2012-01-31 17:22

IT is they whites Man! Ain't no such word as contradiction in Zulu!

      Jymiro - 2012-01-31 17:25

@Piet Holomisa is Xhosa and not Zulu

      Cracker - 2012-01-31 17:27

It is about climbing on the bandwagon and playing for an audience of potential supporters. In other words, don't let others quite outdo you in your miserable attacks on whites. "Your" of course not referring to you but to the generalizer.

  • Alex - 2012-01-31 17:18

Does he believe his own rubbish

  • Piet - 2012-01-31 17:21

  • Larry - 2012-01-31 17:25

What a load of rubbish. I expected better from Holomisa.

  • Juan - 2012-01-31 17:25

Yes Bantu your ANC chums don't like the truth to come out about their shenanigans, so we play the race card. Works like a charm hey.

      paulmandlankosi - 2012-01-31 17:51

Him and ANC are not chums

      Nozii - 2012-01-31 18:33

  • Ian - 2012-01-31 17:27

  • George - 2012-01-31 17:29

Bantu, go back to your mountain kingdom......and grow your mielies u chop....democracy...what???????????????/....

      Burtfred - 2012-01-31 18:10

George, Holomisa is a Xhosa. He comes from Transkei. The "Mountain Kingdom" is Lesotho. That's where Sothos come from. So why don't you go back to Greece, where no-one pays taxes, they suck Euros from the long-suffering EU and the economy has collapsed.

      Blip - 2012-02-01 11:05

Yep, Transkei is no "mountain kingdom". The Amathole Mts are only hills.

  • raymond.kok3 - 2012-01-31 17:31

ROFL!! ±20 years down the line? seriously?? what cave has he been living in

  • hennie.dreyer1 - 2012-01-31 17:41

Hi Bantu, maybe that is the reason why it is still functioning properly and not propagating political half truth's and views that will satisfy the politicians of the country. The beauty of an democratic society with a healthy free press system operating in it, is that if there is a need for alternative views&reporting somebody would see the opportunity and provide that service to society. So go for it and create your own publishing house and enjoy the fruits of your labour.

  • isak.botma - 2012-01-31 17:44

  • Tshivhombela Fhatuwani - 2012-01-31 17:46

Print media is business unlike government funded SABC. I am much more satisfied with the current media ownership. There are many wealthy fellow blacks who can also start their media empires. I hope there is no regulations that bar blacks from starting their media conglomerates. It is not about ownership , it's about the content. Print media remain the only alternative news informer when SABC is busy retelling what we already know. Mr Holomisa, whites have to power so it's you Brigadier Holomisa. You have been a leader under TBVC setup and nobody would love to exhume the past as it does not serve us good. We don't need your history lectures, we have already heard enough of history recently. What is the way forward regarding the imminent info bill.

      Jymiro - 2012-01-31 18:14

He is talking about the present and not the past. White minoirty ownership of the print media is the present. Remember when the ANC proposed to start its own paper the same media wrote all sorts of stories about how that will impact on media freedom because advertising will be diverted to that paper. Actually your line of argument is exact the borne of contention. Because print media is businessit could easly as it do support the agenda of its masters, the white minority capital to oppose everything that the government do too transform this country. I hope you are edcated now.

      Tshivhombela Fhatuwani - 2012-01-31 18:50

@ Jymiro, my friend the current enviroment is conducive to start the business you want if you have capital and buying shares from the existing media moguls is the short cut. My argument still stands, the ANC has enough capital to start a paper irrespective of who says what. If ANC stopped to start their paper because it listened to the existing media co. then since when has ANC started to listen to people. The print media business is tricky and not many would ever venture into print media. The only paper that made it in the market is Daily Sun by outseating Sowetan in black market. Despite sales, advertising remains the main source of income and the income has to be spread on the wagon wheel. That's my view and I respect yours as well, bro. No beef but your education is not essential.

All I can see is theoretical freedom for many and an orgy for the politically connected. Democracy in SA is a fruit of collective efforts by different individuals and organisations. If you feed yourself from corrupt trough then go and poison hopeless child support grant receivers with ten kids each and not me. You must be very stupid to believe 'apartheid' would still be around even if ANC was never formed. May be you should have rephrased it, they liberated themselves to loot and steal from the poor.
