Johannesburg - Agang SA arouses curiosity, leader Mamphela Ramphele said on Wednesday.

"We know we are a young party. Wherever we knock we are met with curiosity because we represent fresh new ideas," she said at a University of Johannesburg women's month event.

She said her party had developed its own policies on the economy, safety and security, health, education and the public service.

"Agang will go into next year's elections with these new ideas and policies to build a better South Africa," Ramphele said.

On the Zimbabwe elections where Robert Mugabe won, Ramphele said she hoped South Africa would have smooth elections next year and avoid a "Zanufication" of South Africa.

"We need to make sure what has happened in Zimbabwe does not happen here. We have to work together with the Independent Electoral Commission [IEC] to ensure credible elections."

Earlier, Ramphele said South Africa needed to go back to basics to emancipate itself.

South Africans did not undergo "orientation" before the advent of democracy in 1994, and therefore most carried deep wounds from the apartheid legacy.

"As people as a whole, we need to go back to basics... we need civic education and to get young people to learn what it means to be a citizen," she said.
