Cape Town - Audit results show the Special Investigating Unit is in decline following the departure of long-time head Willie Hofmeyr, the DA claimed on Wednesday.
Democratic Alliance MP Debbie Schafer said the problems pointed to a lack of good leadership following Hofmeyr's exit late last year.
"It is clear that the SIU, which in the previous financial year had its best year ever under the leadership of Adv Willie Hofmeyr, is on a downward slide," said Schafer.
"This regression is a direct result of the president removing Hofmeyr, still with no reason having been given by him, and replacing him with somebody who is more intent on driving a political agenda than running the unit."
The Auditor General's report has faulted the SIU for failing to report on its strategic objectives, submitting its strategic plan late, and failing to put in place a performance management policy.
Schafer also noted lapses in complying with policy in procuring temporary staff and employing consultants, and problems with information technology systems. She suggested there might be a sinister reason why president Jacob Zuma had yet to appoint a permanent replacement for Hofmeyr.
"The fact that Adv Nomvula Mokhatla is still managing the unit in an acting position after 10 months shows that the president is at best unconcerned, but more likely is actively participating in undermining the fight against corruption by failing to take decisive action to fill the position with an independent and suitably qualified individual."
