School audits a waste of money - DA

2011-06-01 21:21

Johannesburg - Financial audits of 85 Gauteng schools are a waste of money, the Democratic Alliance said on Monday.

"It is unacceptable that the department wastes money on forensic audits as this is a reflection of poor management," DA education spokesperson Khume Ramulifho said in a statement.

Gauteng Education MEC Barbara Creecy said in the provincial legislature that the schools' finances were being investigated because they had not submitted audited financial statements.

Said Ramulifho: "This is a serious situation as many of these schools have poor academic performance and can't account for the money given to them by the department."

He said the R2.6m spent by the department on audits in the last financial year could have been better spent on upgrading facilities at schools.

Come on DA .. you contradict yourselves! Do not moan about corruption one minute and then when an audit is done to reveal corruption you moan about the audit. For peet sakes! Argue the relevant issues .. if not, I should never have voted DA!

Those poor kids are left with dire learning facilities and poor academic performance.. The kids passing their grades are the issue! our education is suffering and is weakening the poor. To spend R2 mil on upgrades rather than audits - not because of corruption but because financials were not submitted... how are some of these schools suppose to do that??

@Phuquem, my understanding is not that they are complaining about the audits but the fact that these forensic audits are having to be done because the management of the schools failed to supply their required originally audited results. In other words additional money is being spent to follow up incompetence - hence the issue.

"It is unacceptable that the department wastes money on forensic audits as this is a reflection of poor management," DA education spokesperson Khume Ramulifho said in a statement. Does mr Ramulifho know the difference between an audit and a forensic audit?? Deliberate biased reporting by News24 to make DA look stupid?? Or a subtle hint why Zile still has so many whites in her government.

The auditing is there to prevent corruption. Schools should be randomly selected each each, instead of auditing all of them.

It's a dripping tap. It's worth spending cash on replacing the washer.
