Johannesburg - Financial audits of 85 Gauteng schools are a waste of money, the Democratic Alliance said on Monday.
"It is unacceptable that the department wastes money on forensic audits as this is a reflection of poor management," DA education spokesperson Khume Ramulifho said in a statement.
Gauteng Education MEC Barbara Creecy said in the provincial legislature that the schools' finances were being investigated because they had not submitted audited financial statements.
Said Ramulifho: "This is a serious situation as many of these schools have poor academic performance and can't account for the money given to them by the department."
He said the R2.6m spent by the department on audits in the last financial year could have been better spent on upgrading facilities at schools.
