Shiceka spending gross misuse of funds: DA

2011-04-10 22:20

Johannesburg - The expenses incurred by Sicelo Shiceka, minister of co-operative governance, were a "gross misuse of public funds", the Democratic Alliance (DA) said on Sunday.

"Considering the poverty and dire need that characterises the lives of so many South Africans, such extravagant expenditure, if true, is disturbing," said spokesperson James Lorimer.

The DA was responding to reports in the Sunday Times of travel expenses Shiceka racked up during overseas visits.

The report claimed that Shiceka had spent in excess of R2.5m on first-class flights and accommodation since 2008.

Lorimer and Independent Democrats (ID) MP Haniff Hoossen called for the Public Protector to investigate the matter.

"Gross Misuse" is the understatement of the decade. DA - stop being so polite. Say it as is is. It is PURE blatant theft.

      Well said there

I would recommend that the State should not be able to use Any Tax Payers Money without permission. tax payers ahould know where their taxes are going to and what for. Only then will they be able to use the funds If permission is granted and proof of spending.

      Thangy - 2011-04-11 08:45

Nothing will happen to him. In all the years ANC comrades have been stealing tax money, none of us can name any who have actually served time for this.

      C S - 2011-04-11 08:47

Does the ANC leaders have NO SHAME??? The sad thing he, he will be a hero amongst his peers .... and the dumb-asses that vote for the ANC .... but I love it ... more people will vote DA ....

Enough is enough with these ANC politicians wasting money! Nail the fool...who the hell does he think he is, to waste this kind of tax money... The ANC government unfortunately are under the misconception that they can spend what they want without recourse! They do not understand what a politician is and what are allowable normal acceptable spending allowances. They think they are god!

  • croix - 2011-04-10 22:53

Asset forfeiture and criminal charges against our honourable minister?

  • lakhan7 - 2011-04-10 22:58

How credible is a party that climbs on the ills of others? What is the DA doing to improve your life? What are any of these terrible parties doing to improve South African Life?

      edvermaak - 2011-04-10 23:06

The DA is doing a lot - to start with, they are trying to garner the votes in order to make a difference. What the ANC is doing on the other hand is to consolidate their pig trough in order to feed the few on the top.

      nonduplume - 2011-04-10 23:07

What has this got to do with the DA? The issue is about a senior ANC Minister who is corrupt!

      Lestor - 2011-04-11 07:10

The DA "climbs on the ills of others" does help my life, if no one complains then the corruption can continue unopposed.

      Maiden - 2011-04-11 07:34

Thats the whole point, the ANC has failed dismally. What can the DA do to improve your life if they only control WC and Midvaal? Vote for them, I guarantee that you'll be able to spot the difference when they actually have the opportunity to make a difference in your area. I for one think Ekurhuleni could do with a shake-up - give the DA a chance - they can't do any worse than the ANC.

      Ockert - 2011-04-11 10:46

The DA and the terrible parties can only change things if they have the power, so how you come to this argument is beyond me ?, The race card is always present when the faults are shown !!!

      buka001 - 2011-04-11 11:11

Well done. You have confirmed yourself as an idiot. You support criminal practices. Your tax money has been used inappropriately. that money wasted could have improved a road, school, clinic or any other service for that matter. So the next time you see a pothole, or any problem, don't complain be happy. You put the people in power who had the chance to fix it. They did not fix it instead they chose to use the money fraudulently for their own personal gain. You supported this. You therefore wnt that hole in the road or poorly functioning hospital. So be happy smile. Drive through the pothole, incur the damages to your vehicle with a smile! You must just hope you don't get injured while driving through that pothole and get dispatched to a government hospital who can't treat you effectively due to a shortage of equipmenst and medicine becasue the people you want in power have taken that money for a trip to New York. Smile and be happy. You voted them into power. You allow them to steal. You therefore should be happy with all the problems. No complaints!

Can the NPA confirm WHEN this corruptocrat will be ARRESTED & CHARGED?

      Daniel - 2011-04-11 08:50

Not yet, they first have to establish if they can do a deal to give the receptionist at the hotel indemnity, and then find some secret tapes, blah, blah

      Ockert - 2011-04-11 10:49

He will pay it off at R10 per month , which will never happen -- like the Travel Gate guys.

      Virginia - 2011-04-11 11:19

You will find him somewhere else in the government department directory, just like the rest of the corrupt officials.

  • nonduplume - 2011-04-10 23:05

This is typical of the ANC - corrupt incompetent idiot is caught taking from the poor and the various spokes@rsholes attempt to justify it. But watch this space just like all the others that came before the ANC will just ignore it until it goes away as every single minister and mec of this stupid gov is just the same!

  • fracham - 2011-04-10 23:06

So who among you is going to put a stop to this . Who is going to do what when and how.We can whinge but what can we do. Do you think these guys give a hoot about this whinging. Sweet nothing. Those who run country control the purse strings. There is very little we can do about it. In India they have just passed and Anti corruption bill. In Africa , they are revolting up North. Something is going to come this way . One day.Till then ... Eisch ....???

      edvermaak - 2011-04-10 23:23

I am going to take the first step in stopping this - I am going to VOTE and campaign for the DA. What are you going to do?

      Martin du Plessis - 2011-04-10 23:28

I'm not sure. Maybe buy a sniper rifle from the goverment? They seem pretty free with those lately.

  • Monica - 2011-04-10 23:48

That is why the Government banned the Scorpions. They were hot on the trail of criminals like this man. It is theft and he should be arrested and be fired; not suspended with a salary and carry his own court costs. How much money is spent in court on Government employees that is involved with corruption. Why must the tax payers pay for their sins? Vote DA for a better country before ANC destroy all of us!!

  • Smindlo - 2011-04-11 08:21

ANC thieves at it again!! when will the stealing of taxpayers' money going to end?

  • Daniel - 2011-04-11 08:23

Why should we be so eloquent ? In any normal, civilized society the man would be branded a thief, and thrown into jail forthwith. He would also lose any priviledges that he enjoyed as a minister and have to pay back the money. The reason that this happens in our society, is that we allow it to, and that our opposition parties are by and large probably the most ineffectual in the world. If this had happened in the UK, half the populace would be demonstrating in the streets, we sit back and bitch and moan.

  • vloftie - 2011-04-11 08:37

I would love to know if there are any checks and balances in place for issues like this - It seems that all the politicians has a blank check book that they just spend as they please... no authorisation needed... Just spend how you please... This one is now caught because of the exorbitant amount but what about the small amounts...

      Daniel - 2011-04-11 13:45

      Virginia - 2011-04-11 11:24

You quite right Badballie, the problem is that why do they want to live like the same people they dispise so much. They should be out there in their kraals driving their cattle, thinking of how they can steal the next farmers livestock, but suddenly they are now incharge of a lot money and do not know how to react except in the same way that they are used to, theft, which does not men very much to them.

  • ME - 2011-04-11 08:52

Now I wonder how Shiceka thinks he can then set an example of good governance and financial management to the "financially struggling" municipalities in South Africa?! ANC - can you not find honest, competent, leading people?

  • Pencilgraffiti - 2011-04-11 08:57

I would like to propose that ALL Government finance is made available online.. Money that goes into SARS, how it is distributed and eventually spent. Why not? It's our money and this information should be freely available to all at any time.

  • Virginia - 2011-04-11 11:17

Whats new in the life of government officials in South Africa. Is this not a reason not to vote for these idiots, when they see money they go mad I think they think that it belongs to them. PLease Investigate e ery goernment official, we really need to have TRC on these people let them be publicly embarrassed by what they have done, and let them answer to this theft, because that is all it is theft. Just Mr John Public owe the government R5.00 then you get threatened with arrest. What is wrong with these leaders, please people take them out of their positions of power.

  • p123 - 2011-04-11 11:19

And so the corrupt ANC comrades carry on and on - are there any non-corrupy members left in the ANC? Has corruption become so endemic that every single ANC member is corrupt? Is being corrupt a prerequisite now for ANC membership? They make me sick, why do I pay tax???

  • djg - 2011-04-11 12:41

So, now what is the DA going to do about this...will it also just be forgotten...what follow up mechanisms are in place - if any. Is this typical all talk again by the DA?

  • Mushin - 2011-04-11 12:45

Cheap political point scoring by the DA again!! You'll later find that the guy did nothing wrong. He may have used his own funds... Ooooo but then again Blacks are supposed to be poor living shacks...whenever a black person has a little money, he/she is corrupt....tipical oppressor's mindset!! And the media won't apologies for this either...

  • Mhleli - 2011-04-11 15:01

Let's face the facts; the ANC our forefathers worked and died for isn’t the same today. Now each time we vote it seems that we're putting money into the pockets of bourgeois and bourgeoisie politicians who have very little or no interest in the wellbeing of voters. Many citizens choose not to vote, not because they don't love the ANC but because in their minds, it's better to do nothing than vote for the DA or other opposition parties. In fact voting for the DA would be tantamount to resuscitating the NP - the fact that they complained about issues such as Tony Yengeni's slaughtering of a cow to observe his culture, the Zulu 'Ukweshwama Festival', etc., is frighteningly reminiscent of apartheid oppression. Even though there is political chaos in The Republic, at least we can be ourselves as Africans which means that I can proudly denounce Christianity to observe my own African Traditional Religion without fear or prejudice! But politicians, do guard against another Zimbabwe - only a handful of Blacks have economic empowerment the majority of whom are politicians and their collaborators/friends/relatives/comrades. South Africa is the epitome of George Orwell's 'Animal Farm'! The Pigs are in power! Oh, and which pig is Shiceka? Credit must be ascribed when and where it's due: the DA is sometimes correct in its criticism. They've raised a rather valid point in Shiceka's alleged abuse of State money (his manner of spitting in the faces of the poor, as it were)!

  • StoneAngel - 2011-04-11 15:48
