Cape Town - The task team mandated to investigate a new electoral system for South Africa and help draft new election legislation has handed its report to Home Affairs Minister Mangosuthu Buthelezi.
The minister said in a statement on Monday the report would be submitted to the next sitting of Cabinet.
"The report will be available for public and parliamentary scrutiny after Cabinet has had an opportunity of noting its contents," he said.
According to the Cabinet secretariat, the full Cabinet is due to meet for a three-day lekgotla, starting January 22.
The team, headed by Frederik van Zyl Slabbert, has been tasked with proposing a new electoral system for South Africa, following the expiration of the previous system after the last election.
Buthelezi said the recommendations were the product of broad public consultation, extensive scientific research, an international conference, and consultations with key stakeholders.
"The majority report of the Electoral Task Team recommends a new electoral system which is deemed to be more suitable to the needs and aspirations of South African democracy and to the promotion of accountability in politics," he said.
