Cape Town - The 13 South African soldiers killed in a clash with rebels in the Central African Republic (CAR) had served their country selflessly, Parliament's defence committees said on Tuesday.

"While we mourn the loss of so many innocent lives, we also extend our infinite gratitude for their selfless service and dedication to our country and continent."

In a statement, the portfolio committee on defence and military veterans and the joint standing committee on defence extended condolences to the soldiers' families.

"We applaud the heroic actions of the SANDF [SA National Defence Force] in defence of democratic values, principles of human rights, the sovereignty of the CAR and South African assets," they said.

The soldiers' contribution to peace and security in Africa had positively affected many lives.

"As public representatives, we will continue our efforts to ensure that the wellbeing of soldiers is protected and that morale remains at a high level."

The committees said President Jacob Zuma had informed them of the deployment of South African troops to the CAR.

Earlier, the SANDF named the 13 soldiers killed and said they were all members of One Parachute Battalion, from Bloemfontein.

Twenty-seven other SANDF members were injured.

One soldier, who was initially reported missing in action, had been found alive and "in good spirit[s]".
