Slow start for Tafelsig voting

Cape Town - Voting has been slow at two of the polling stations in Tafelsig on Wednesday to decide a by-election with important implications for the city of Cape Town's government.

At Tafelsig Primary in Mitchell's Plain, about 40 people had cast their ballots by 09:00, said presiding officer Sandra Adolph. She expected more people during the course of the day, particularly when people returned home from work.

Wednesday's by-election is seen as a two-horse race between Democratic Alliance candidate Sheval Arendse and the Independent Democrats' June Frans. The by-election was called after Sheval Arendse resigned from the ID and joined the DA.

The Independent Electoral Commission expects provisional results to be announced close to midnight tonight.

Poling stations close at 21:00.
