Johannesburg - Media reports about Western Cape Local Government MEC Anton Bredell's concern over Oudtshoorn municipality's financial position were unfounded, the municipality said on Tuesday.

"Nothing could possibly be further from the truth.

Oudtshoorn’s financial position is robust and can best be described as efficacious... the balance sheet is solvent; and the liquidity is above reproach," said speaker John Stoffels in a statement.

Accusations to the contrary were misleading and malicious.

"The municipality’s creditors are paid within 30 days and the [MEC] should either provide proof to the contrary or hold his peace," said Stoffels.

Bredell was instead encouraged to ensure the payment of around R2m the province owed the municipality.

DA spokesperson Mmusi Maimane said on 31 May the DA had taken over the municipality after a motion of no-confidence was passed against the mayor, deputy mayor and Stoffels.

Five of 11 ANC councillors and Cope councillors voted with the DA, following which a DA mayor, deputy mayor and speaker were elected.

Stoffels said he strongly disagreed with the DA's version of events relating to the 31 May meeting, which the DA believed was a legitimate gathering.

Walkout

SABC news reported that ANC Mayor Gordon April and four other ANC members walked out of the meeting, "after a heated exchange of words" and that the council meeting proceeded without them.

After the council meeting, the five ANC members resigned and joined the DA, Maimane said at the time.

"The ANC councillors were clear regarding the reasons for their resignation. They are fed up with the bad service delivery, mismanagement and maladministration within the ANC-led municipality," he said.

Stoffels said on 31 May that the take-over was illegal and the municipality would take the matter to court.

The new DA leadership said it had proof that the high court had found other, similar, meetings lawful.

The court received submissions from the two parties in the first week of June, with the matter postponed to August.
