Johannesburg - The State has revealed that it cannot proceed with drunk-driving charges against the former ANC chief whip, Tony Yengeni, because his blood sample was tampered with, the SABC reported on Wednesday.
It further states that the blood sample is unfit to be taken for chemical analysis. This is because former Goodwood station commander, Siphiwo Hewana, allegedly gave an unknown person access to the blood sample.
This has emerged in the charge sheet against Hewana in the Parow Regional Court. He is facing three charges of defeating the ends of justice, inciting perjury and interfering with members of the police.
It is alleged that he instructed police officers to open a second false docket against Yengeni in oder to change the time of his arrest, making it three hours earlier.
The charge sheet also states Yengeni was not permitted to drive a motor vehicle at the time of his arrest, in terms of his parole conditions.
Yengeni is currently out on parole on a fraud conviction.
The case against Hewana has been postponed until May 15.
