Bloemfontein - A robber met his match when two security guards from Eunice Girls High caught him after he allegedly tried to rob a student house in Universitas, Bloemfontein.
A student's skull was cracked during the attack and he had bruises to his face and two cuts to his head.
The security guards saw the man jumping over the school's fence from the Universitas side. They pursued and apprehended him.
According to police spokesperson superintendent Annelie Wrensch, Brandt Janse van Rensburg, 20, from Postmasburg, who is a hotel management student at Damelin, was sleeping on a couch facing the front door of the student house in Groenewoudt Street.
Saw the blow coming
Five other students were in their rooms inside the house.
Janse van Rensburg said he heard something behind him, and when he looked up, saw a man holding a 10kg dumb-bell above his head.
He said he saw the blow coming and tried to stop it with a pillow, but the dumb-bell hit him. He lost consciousness.
According to Wrensch the men apparently entered the house from the back. She said they might have picked up the bar outside.
Janse van Rensburg said the other students struggled with the robbers. "They nearly got them." The men ran away.
A worker at the school apparently saw the man running from a plot in Groenewoudt Street and jumping over the fence. He called the security gaurds, who pursued the suspect.
The worker said they saw a police vehicle parked at a house and handed the robber over to them.
Janse van Rensburg was admitted to Life Rosepark Hospital and was in a stable condition.
The 23-year-old man will appear on a charge of robbery in the Bloemfontein magistrate's court on Thursday.
