Succession battle crippling ANC - Gigaba

2012-05-25 16:04

Johannesburg - The ANC's obsession with succession battles is crippling its ability to deliver, Public Enterprises Minister Malusi Gigaba said on Friday.

"In the recent years we have become so inwardly focused that our people should be wondering if they still matter at all," Gigaba told the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) national congress in Kempton Park.

"Factionalism is slowly and seriously crippling our movement and distracting our attention from our historic mandate. We are fixated with succession battles."

Leadership squabbles were detracting the ANC from the urgent business of the day. Gigaba called for unity and discipline.

Succession debates had been dominating the media in the lead-up to the ANC's 53rd national conference in Mangaung in December.

Gigaba said militancy had always been a part of the ANC's revolutionary struggle, but it could not allow militant behaviour that was alien to the party.

"The militancy ... has always been required to enrich the struggle. We can therefore not allow opportunists and demagogues to hijack, to advocate and perpetuate alien behaviour within the movement."

This had "manifested itself in various ways including some shockingly crude, disrespectful and un-ANC remarks made in the public domain".

Prior to Gigaba taking the podium, the NUM passed a resolution to support the ANC's leadership elected in Polokwane in 2007 at Mangaung.

The NUM is a key constituent of the Congress of SA Trade Unions, which is part of the tripartite alliance, along with the ANC and the SA Communist Party.

No Gigaba... The ANC's lack of understanding on how to run a country is what is keeping you guys from delivering. Hand over the government to Zille if you guys care anything for you people!

      Sande - 2012-05-25 16:15

      typical

      colin.dovey - 2012-05-25 16:31

Yup @Sande - it is much more "typical" now as the ANC fails the people it is meant to be serving. More concern is shown about a stupid painting than cutting out RAMPANT Corruption.

      mundu.olewega - 2012-05-25 16:58

They couldn't struggle their way out of a wet brown paper bag. "Militancy part of their struggle"... what a bunch of wallies.

      Jacques - 2012-05-25 17:29

No Gigaba you never delivered only received for your selfs. You are are talking about the succession battle crippling the ANC but this is exacly what you were doing with NUM. This is old news and the only way you ANC can rule is by talking with double meanings. You are trying to get support from NUM are you not. You are are telling us something we have been telling you all along. It is a one party state with one party rules with a one party brain cell

      sheda.habib - 2012-05-25 17:58

Factionalism, tribalism and racism. Look up their defintions in the dictionary/ THERE IS NO DIFFERENCE. The ANC is racist but uses different words to hide it. They suck. Nothing they do is right..

      sandy.langenstrass - 2012-05-25 18:50

If you black folk can not see your way clear to vote the DA into power(because you think they are just whites...there are more black folk in the party than whites)...but at the same time you not happy really with the way the anc are doing things...BUT YOU'LL STILL VOTE FOR THEM.....this has to be the most unintelligent, most confusing statement a human could make. You should rather vote for none of them...or hope a new educated, honest and patriotic black party comes along.

      Alf - 2012-05-26 10:04

Piet, you have the right idea, but they don't give a rat's backside about their people! Have you ever seen a municipality, where the ANC had to hand over to another party? Files and rubbish litter the office floors, equipment is damaged. Even toilets broken and toilet seats removed! REAL ADULT BEHAVIOUR FROM AN INSECURE AND PARANOID MOVEMENT LIKE THE ANC!

  • dennis.vermaak.5 - 2012-05-25 16:22

I think it is lot more than just succession battles crippling the ANC's ability to deliver !!

      Gerhard - 2012-05-25 17:05

It took the ANC 100 years to get where they are today. LOL!

      Sharon - 2012-05-25 17:38

All this jostling, the feeding trough is only so big. They certainly are getting themselves into a frenzy! If nothing else, it promises to be very interesting.

      Paul - 2012-05-25 23:14

Closer comparison to Zimbabwe and the Mugabe regime

  • George - 2012-05-25 16:27

Who is succeeding who? The only person crippling the ANC is you. U guys must all be fired period. There is succession all over the world even in America it is only in Africa where leaders are against succession. It is almost june yet we still have this strict shower rule that we shouldn't even think about it, otherwise the shower man is coming for u. Maybe Malema was right we are in a dictator state

  • Adam - 2012-05-25 16:33

The democratically elected dictatorship is cracking, as if a spear has been driven into it.

  • Dhavandran - 2012-05-25 16:35

'Prior to Gigaba taking the podium, the NUM passed a resolution to support the ANC's leadership elected in Polokwane in 2007 at Mangaung. The NUM is a key constituent of the Congress of SA Trade Unions, which is part of the tripartite alliance, along with the ANC and the SA Communist Party.' well you did it again, confirmed your votes for the anc to still be in power and f@#k this country into the ground.the anc is all about power and not service delivery. we are in for another scenario of protests and e-trolls and loud noises about service delivery for the next term of the anc. people we don't need a new constitution , we need a new government. num and cosatu please don;t be hoodwinked by the anc and their empty promises. you have the power to change this, vote with your heads and not your hearts. the anc will use you and discard you like a used condom. once you vote them in, you will be back to square one, and you will be protesting in the streets again.you will not move an inch!its always 1 step foward and 10 steps back. - SAPA

  • Willem - 2012-05-25 16:38

Makes me think about the election slogans "a better life for all" and "together we can make South Africa work". Really? The ANC cannot even unite as a party/alliance internally. How are you going to get this country to "work together" to make "a better life for all"?

      djmain1 - 2012-05-25 16:44

"A better lie for all" more like it!

  • Nigel - 2012-05-25 16:40

Didn't know you could cripple something that's already crippled.

      Adam - 2012-05-25 16:48

Nigel, think they are walking on crutches, 3 crutches, one for each of the tripartite movements..........very easy to trip and fall. zuma should do the honourable thing and throw himself onto his own spear.

  • danny.levin.351 - 2012-05-25 16:45

Hehe, bring out the popcorn ladies and gents. the mud slinging contest is about to begin. nothing like watching a bunch of chops fighting to see who gets to stick his hand deeper in the cookie-jar...

  • John - 2012-05-25 17:02

Another excuse to hide reality. The ANC cannot deliver but don't worry too much as soon you will be out of power.

  • Kent - 2012-05-25 17:04

"In the recent years we have become so inwardly focused that our people should be wondering if they still matter at all," Gigaba told the NUM. no no no no THIS HAS BEEN GOING ON FOR 18 YEARS, not only in recent years and yes the poeple do not matter since then.

  • Michael - 2012-05-25 17:05

crippled along time now...focus has been on crippling the country for which has taken them 18 years and theyre almost there....sooo exciting

  • Ryno - 2012-05-25 17:05

    "together we can steal more"

  • Michael - 2012-05-25 17:14

Blady blady blady...God help the ANC,cause im sure alot of them are still learning to tie shoe-laces and cleaning up in the bafroom.Shame,DESMOND TUTU would be the best president.

  • danny.levin.351 - 2012-05-25 17:14

Lesetjam, your attitude (sadly shared by too many) shows that you are so racist that you'd rather vote for people that you know are screwing you and stuffing up your country than for someone who is honest, competent and has the interest of the country in front of them. The only thing that rivals your racism is your stupidity. This is precisely why African countries that were once successful end up relying on the charity of the WEST (mostly white people) to keep them from starving and dying of desease.

  • Derry - 2012-05-25 17:16

Odd when the top guy at Nedbank commented on political leadership he was told to shut up and stick to business, with threats to take away government business away from Nedbank.

  • danny.levin.351 - 2012-05-25 17:17

Rumor has it that before the next elections the ANC will be giving to each of their voters a T-Sihrt, one KFC meal and a botle of lube....

  • Mike - 2012-05-25 17:27

@ Sande: You're a project manager so you should know that 'Project 'service delivery' et al is being screwed up big time because of ??????????????????? You fill in the answer!

  • Lana En Bertus Pienaar - 2012-05-25 17:50

there will not be another black president, and this was predicted almost 100 years ago

  • maseratifittipaldi - 2012-05-25 17:50

The ANC cares only for the ANC. Stealing from you, stealing from me. Putting themselves first. "Together, we can take more" Why do people still tolerate political parties in this modern age? Can't they see that Parties will always be about themselves first and foremost?

  • Stewart Croucamp - 2012-05-25 17:56

Maybe the ANC should stop struggling and just give up.

  • sheda.habib - 2012-05-25 17:57

"I have a dream" - that a man should be judged by his character and not the colour of his skin! Recall these words? This platform or forum will not bring about a meaningful change. If each and everyone of us change our attitude towards our fellow man, our children will have a future, possibly meaningful change. Given the ANC's flagrant attitude with financial controls, the number of departemental failures will escalate, and the situation at ground level is going to woresen. Some policies are a double edged sword, strengthening one side and weakening the other i.e 'affirmitive action'. What if we all see everyone as our equals? Education, training and development would be of paramount importance. Our children are the ones who will steer our economy tomorrow. My concern is how much more suffering is going to take place between now, and when things hit the fan? Sadly though we do have amongst us, well talented, business minded, unbiased and CONSTRUCTIVE individuals who could carry out a sterling task at relighting the candle and leading from the front. This will never happen if we continue to judge man by the colour of his skin and not the content of his character! Become less emotional and more objective, for all our sake!

  • Bless Boswell - 2012-05-25 19:47

Ag, everybody wants to be boss. Let's sit back and watch the fun.

  • Derrick - 2012-05-25 21:31

All this bleating about how bad the ANC is wont take anybody anywhere. The truth is Whites will never rule this country again come what may. Those bleating loudest are staying put when they are free to go anywhere they wish. The big problem is all countries are stretched out financially because of the shortcomings of CAPITALISM and not very accomodative of deserters. Life under the ANC for Black people has improved compared to life under APARTHEID for sure.Millions of homes built,Social Services ie child support, rural development etc. Corruption is endemic in this country but only Govt. corruption is given prominence.Business is no holy cow as the Competition Commission has fined big companies hefty fines for the corrupt practices ie price fixing. Countries from the so called first world are jostling to come and invest in the African continent and S.A. ie Walmart and many others because of stability in the financial markets and possible growth.Greece Spain and other European countries cannot balance their books because of their inability to pay their debts.Populist governments are toppled because of austerity measures. The Euro zone is begging Greece to stay on board but ordinary Greek citizens are threatening to take to the streets in protests. People in their right minds should weigh their options and realise that after all S.A.is a young democracy and in spite of it`s problems, promises a better future for all who live in it harmoniously.

      staci.turnbull - 2012-05-25 22:54

But didn't the government not want walmart in? I agree we Are a very young democracy, just wish there was less corruption, more spending on things that really matter and less on changing street names. I love this country and I'm really not fussed who rules, ANC, DA Whatever politician s all suck no matter the party, but they are a necessary evil, I just want my kids to be safe, get a decent education in their government school, and be able to get jobs and have a good life, is that a lot to ask?

  • Gerald Jordaan - 2012-05-26 02:38

LADIES & GENTLEMEN...WELCOME TO THE ANC SIDE SHOW!! SEE THE SPEAR IN ACTION & WATCH THE IMPLOSION!!

      maseratifittipaldi - 2012-05-26 05:23

I disagree, Gerald. The ANC will throw so much money at themselves, that they are bound to reaffirm their "unity" at the end of the conference. But their "unity" means nothing to the people. It does not bring prosperity. It only brings further plunder, suppression and misery. The implosion will happen the day the people decide not to vote for the ANC anymore. It is for the people to decide, not the ANC.

  • Mboneni - 2012-05-26 08:05

NOTHING ALIEN IN THE ANC MILITANCY HAD BEEN PART OF THE ANC, ONLY WHEN THAT MILITANCY IS DIRECTED SOMEWHERE,IF THE MILITANCY IS WITHIN THE MOVEMENT THEN WE HEAR ABOUT ALIEN TENDENCIES.THE ONLY ALIEN TENDENCY WAS WHEN JACOB ZUMA WAS ELECTED TO RUN THE COUNTRY WITH HIS CORRUPTION CHARGES AND LOOSE MORALS.HEALTH SYSTEM IN LIMPOPO IS DISFUNCTIONAL,YOU GO TO HOSPITAL OR CLINICS,THERE IS NO MEDICATION AND IF PEOPLE IN THE ANC CONTINUE TO JOSTLE FOR POLITICAL POSITION AT THE EXPENSE OF OUR WELLBEING THE FUTURE LOOK BLEAK

      sandy.langenstrass - 2012-05-26 18:32

If the anc can not..make sure that their citizens get good health care....what use are they. Can you imagine taking your wife or girlfriend or your very ill child to a government hospital...and they die because of the lack of hospital services....but they would have been fine had the hospital given them the right treatment. The shocking thing is...if one of these government officials, get ill or a family member.....they will for sure go to a PRIVATE HOSPITAL....WHAT DOES THAT TELL YOU?

  • Johnnie - 2012-05-26 10:35

Do not say too much Mr. Gigaba, you might just also be looking for another job.

  • Antin - 2012-05-26 11:44

A lot of crippling going on. We have a crippling corruption rate. Crippling unemployment rate. SA's education is crippled AND crippling SA. The ANC-rule is crippling SA. Now we hear they cripple themselves too Small wonder.

  • sfiso.nsibande1 - 2012-05-28 16:10

ANC will never be crippled, we will continue being strong and dominance but we as ANC should guide against power hunger opportunist who are disruptive in nature, ANC maintains order instil in us through the movements rank and the blood of our brothers who were slain for this victory and we shall deal harshly with the perpetors after Mangaung to make sure that never in our this shall again arise.

The anc is too big the be a cohesive organization. It will only get it's act together if it is small enough for all it's members to agree on anything. Meantime vote DA. It is on the up, the anc is on the way down.

  • Alan - 2012-06-30 19:36

@ lesetjam: did u go to school your spelling sucks ? the anc are going to lose to the DA not by giving it away but their stealing, murdering, lying and deceitful way they goven !
