Support for ANC breakaway

Cape Town - Almost a quarter of black people polled in a phone survey this week support the formation of a breakaway party from the African National Congress, research company TNS said on Friday.

Just over half the whites questioned thought it was a good idea, with support dropping to 43% among coloureds, 19% among Indians and 22% among blacks.

"Whilst [overall] support for a breakaway party from the ANC is in the minority, nonetheless, it is significant," TNS said.

"That 22% of the black sample feel it is a good idea is notable."

The survey was conducted among 250 people in the major metropolitan areas with access to landlines.

Zuma should stand trial

Other findings were that three quarters of the people polled, including 58% of blacks, still believed ANC president Jacob Zuma should stand trial for corruption.

And while 70% of respondents thought Thabo Mbeki did a good job as president of the country, 41% believed he should also be charged with corruption.

TNS said the 70% approval figure for Mbeki represented a feeling among all races that he had left a significant legacy, despite his approval ratings having fallen over the past few years.

Less than a third of the sample thought Zuma was doing a good job as president of the ANC, while 43% thought Kgalema Motlanthe was doing well as his deputy.

However, TNS said, of importance was that 26% of respondents said they did not know whether Zuma was doing a good job, a figure that rose to 40% for Motlanthe.

'Wait-and-see stance'

This showed many people were adopting a "wait-and-see stance".

"Nonetheless, at present, Mr Motlanthe has a somewhat wider support base than Mr Zuma," TNS said.

Most people felt - and here there were no differences by race - that Mbeki should not have been axed by the ANC in the way he was.

But just under two thirds said they were positive about South Africa and its future.

Mr Mbeki must establish his own party.I ll apply for Youth league President as i know what is required and i must not mislead people.

CTheB 9/26/2008 2:55:47 PM
All racist coconuts, everyone who supported a split, everyone who supported Mbeki or didn't support Zuma. Julius is coming for you.

Ginger 9/26/2008 2:57:52 PM
Splitting the ANC won't help. You already have the UDM that comes from the ANC, it did not affect the party in anyway. The only significant change would come when the tri-partite alliance is dissolved and the Communist Party contests in its own capacity.

Hero Nakamura 9/26/2008 3:00:06 PM
ANC breakaway a dream! Even it did happen, the breakaway faction will not survive!

Squash 9/26/2008 3:00:26 PM
Nice try, this is a well ochestrated propaganda...

Dave 9/26/2008 3:02:57 PM
A poll based on 250 people is no basis to draw such wide ranging conclusions. It is not a valid sample. This story, like most on this drab, petty little site, should not have been published.

Daxrsa 9/26/2008 3:07:25 PM
Seriously how can a survey of 250 people be anywhere near representative? Meaningless article.

representative 9/26/2008 3:10:52 PM
How can a survey under 250 people make headline news?

Z 9/26/2008 3:14:22 PM
Nah...it won't happen.

Delshe 9/26/2008 3:14:46 PM
People lets reflect on what the ANC stood and still stand for and that's a united fron for ALL...yes I know that people will say who all some will question whom it favours but do we want to go back to what the DA has stipulated and that's that they stand for the 'coloureds" what a racist statement overall, did we not want categories out and they want to place it back when the old NP split who supported them...know if you are and have always voted ANC where's the loyalty is it not to the party.

Johnson 9/26/2008 3:19:10 PM
I must say I am not surprised that Motlanthe is doing better in the poll than Zuma, a ploy by the ANC to win support for the election and then let Zuma take over after the election. Everything around Zuma is either in the back door or with a ploy somewhere. Jumping over the wall instead of coming through the gate ?

jfky 9/26/2008 3:21:12 PM
GOOD idea...start of democracy. What we saw up untill now was a circus. Get real now, the opportunity has landed.

Olivia 9/26/2008 3:21:43 PM
When was this survey carried out and who participated? Although I support the idea of another party, I do not think it must be done to contest the coming elections. I think it will be to soon to establish a party that can really challenge the ANC.

The Truth 9/26/2008 3:23:08 PM
Let him come.I will introduce him to my friend,Protecta 12 gauge.I will kill for true democracy.

Zaku 9/26/2008 3:26:15 PM
Good idea as the ruling party has too much power.

Yams Juju 9/26/2008 3:26:42 PM
Yeepie horaay, at last a dawn of new hope. I will vote for it and I will spill blood for it. You go guys you are not only heroes but you have achieved a status of Godhood.

Sandile Mabaso 9/26/2008 3:27:27 PM
Its a dream it wont survive, and the results of your survey are incorrect, majority of the blacks dont seat in front of a computer. Majority of the blacks are working hard in townships and rural areas and they will definately vote for the ANC not the new party.

Jay Jay 9/26/2008 3:27:38 PM
No breakaway will succeed. What is needed is a true South African party, not a Black party with some other groups or a white party with some other groups as members. We need a New SA Party, established by true South Africans.

Empowered 9/26/2008 3:27:57 PM
Long overdue. Don't wait to long. See what happened in ZIM. People (MDC) opening their eyes to late. LONG LIVE multi-party democracy DOWN with one party states.

Salim Khan 9/26/2008 3:28:37 PM
Absolute nonsense only those who dont want this new guv to work will propagate such rubbish and Pres.Zuma should be left alone.Mbeki is gone.Good riddance. He is responsible for trying to cause division within the ANC.Proudly ANC South African.VIVA ZUMA VIVA VIVA ANC VIVA

Annie 9/26/2008 3:30:12 PM
I think those who voted for the ANC, and for a particular President should feel robbed, as recalling Mr Mbeki showed the voters that their input meant nothing. IF the new party had honourable leaders above reproach, heck, I would vote for them. I wish for a rainbow - coloured party made up of all races, all striving for a better stronger SA.

LOCO 9/26/2008 3:30:12 PM
The definition of good democracy is when no single party has an outright majority. I'm totally in favour of a split. It will make for better governance!!! And delivery to all its people

There's been too much back stabbing and power grabbing in the ANC for it to stay strong forever. More and more people have become disenchanted with the ANC and it's only a matter of time before someone poses a real challenge to them. It may not be TBo, but the end of the ANC's 2/3rds majority is on its way...

MasterMind 9/26/2008 3:32:11 PM
Well done for this suggestion, I will apply for President of the Youth League and I am white!!! I have confidence in TM and always liked his economic policies. I am not surprised by the brain washed idiotic comments that he receives on here. Fact is JZ is a criminal - else why would he openly admit to exposing everyone if he is prosecuted, the threat of a GUILTY man. SA needs a strong and new opposition, maybe Zille & TM need to form a new pact, both have awesome governance...

kamawa 9/26/2008 3:42:10 PM
thats a long dream, it will never happen as long as the black ppl of this country still leave in the conditions that they leave in, were will that new party get the masses from.Holomisa tried it and failed even Mbeki will fail because they are what they are today because of the ANC.

Sibusiso 9/26/2008 3:45:34 PM
Once a Souith African alwways an ANC, the breakaway is just a media bluff ,anyway even if it would be formed it wont change the everyday life of the man in the street

mandla 9/26/2008 3:54:46 PM
I admit and admire Zuma for onething he did not breakway from the ANC and start his own party. He fought from within and prevailed. Now those who want to breakaway from the ANC must think hard, because its not going to work. It will drive us back into the days of internecine warfare of the 1980's. Those who want to leave the ANC must mobilise from within and prevail. There is 96 years of history in the ANC. If there is a party with ancestors it is the ANC. They wont allow this!

mallencolly 9/26/2008 3:57:26 PM
that would mean about 7,6 million people support the idea or about 27% of the adult population of SA (loosley based on latest population estimates from StatSA). Intereting.
