Task teams to hand out grants

2009-01-15 18:58
Johannesburg - Task teams would soon be formed to distribute money and food vouchers to poor people, the social development department said on Thursday.

Department spokesperson Zanele Mngadi said Minister Zola Skweyiya had approved the establishment of special task teams that would facilitate distribution in the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal.

Skweyiya recently allocated R500m for temporary assistance for poor people. The money will be spent by all nine provinces over the period of three months starting from March.

The department has appealed to traditional leaders, faith-based organisations and youth organisations to help identify poor families who need assistance.

Indigent people would be given between R230 to R960 monthly for the period of three months.

Extensions would be granted in exceptional cases, said Mngadi.
