Johannesburg - President Thabo Mbeki has handed in his resignation, he said on a live television broadcast on Sunday.
"Today (Sunday) I handed a letter to the Speaker of the National Assembly the honourable Baleka Mbete to tender my resignation from the high position of President of the Republic of South Africa effective from the day that will be determined by the National Assembly."
Mbeki said he had been loyal, and traced some of the country's social and economic achievements during his tenure.
"We must admit that we are still faced with many challenges in this regards."
He singled out the criminal justice system to improve the fight against crime and improve moral regeneration.
