2012-06-06 22:27

Cape Town - The torching of train carriages has cost R290m in the past three years, Transport Minister Sibusiso Ndebele said on Wednesday.

The cost amounted to R81.5m in 2009/10; R82.3m in 2010/11; and R126.2m in the past (2011/12) financial year, he said in a written reply to a parliamentary question.

"The costs with regard to the torching of trains... pertains to pure insurance losses, for example, repairs and replacement of assets," Ndebele said.

Some situations you will only be able to understand them when you get tied up to them. Its all about frustration. I understand them coz way back in i used metro rail, this organization doesnt refund you if trains dont operate , they dont have the decency to organise alternate transport, blue train, business express, ravos railways will pass by, using the same powerline, but you are told the problem is with ESKOM. It is trully frustrating.

In the past the ANC condoned, even encouraged this behaviour. Now they condemn it - small wonder the people are confused!

Damn that is a lot of gravy the piggies are losing out on, or are they?

  • anthro45 - 2012-06-07 06:48

We don't want to hear what it cost. We want to know what was done about it.

Chimpanzees behave the same way when they need to be intimidating and I would say destroying trains or any type of property is intimidation. Apple and the tree and 'where' it falls...

      blackjew69 - 2012-06-07 08:51

have no words for you jean, use your words more careful next time.

      Rob - 2012-06-07 09:21

100% Jean ! If the cap fits....Wear it ! And they do.

This Ndebele character omitted to report whether or not the R126m is within budget

      Keith - 2012-06-07 09:22

Who cares if its in budget or not it is a waste of our money

  • Chris - 2012-06-07 09:12

Imagine how far that money could go for much needed drugs, houses, electricity and water infrastructure. But I guess "they heard" now. May be burn all the trains so they can't get work.

  • Ryno - 2012-06-07 09:14

why do they always burn stuff? it seems to be the only thing they are good at doing?! is train-burning a school subject?

      Keith - 2012-06-07 09:24

They will never build destroy destroy destroy. Want proof look at all our infrastructure. Electricity, Sewerage, Roads, Buildings then lets look north into Africa

      Rob - 2012-06-07 09:28

As long as the mass will be oppresed, the results will always be the same, everywhere in the world. It happened in poland, it happened in germany with hitler, it is happening in syria, it is happening in israel - palestine conflict, happened in libya. Monodialogue doesnt produce any results, talking to a incompetent government and expecting results is absurd. Unlike the rich, the poor dont have money to take Metro rail to the high court, burning the coaches is the only way to show their contempt and anger.

      Timothy - 2012-06-07 10:43

Burning trains is not a good way to appease oppression.... Your rhetoric is bullsh1t.. hard work, respect , pride and discipline are what drives people out of dire situations. Take Japan for example... they had two nukes dropped on them.. you never hear them complaining about americans, you never hear them making excuses... no, they built their country into a power house... THEY HAVE PRIDE. That is really the difference. Here instead we all wait around, waiting for magic to happen... no selfless acts for the betterment of society, only selfish acts... if South Africans were more like the Japanese... we would be No1 in the world right now... with more than enough for everyone... Japanese population is 127 million, NO NATURAL RESOURCES South Africa is about 50 million with so many natural resource. The difference.... SOUTH AFRICAS ARE LAZY AND HAVE NO PRIDE. Why dont you stick that in your frustration pipe... Oh and btw... Japan rebuilt in less time than we have been a democracy.

      Chris - 2012-06-07 11:24

@Blackjew69: If you calling the government "Monodialgoued", then well done. I agree. It's not a matter of rich or poor, it's a matter of doing what's right and just. If someone can't deliver they should be fired. If someone is performing below the global bench mark they should be fired. This is something the government doesn't believe in.

      Keith - 2012-06-07 11:45

Timothy well pointed out. Pity Blackjew is so narrow minded and has blinkers on. The palms up open handed give me, give me mentality will never work. Once again you comparing Trains to hitler, dude get a life. You say the government is incompetent but I can guarantee when you go up to make your mark next elections you will be putting your cross next to the green yellow and black, come on tell me I 'm wrong.

  • Timothy - 2012-06-07 10:32

That is the mentality you instilled... live with it.
