Unacceptable for police to guard: FF Plus

2012-04-02 19:37

Johannesburg - It was unacceptable that senior police officers who had been trained to do specialised jobs should be employed as security guards, the Freedom Front Plus said on Monday.

"It cost taxpayers thousands of rand to have them trained to combat crime. It is a mistake to summarily make all personnel who are not allowed to carry handguns, security guards," said spokesperson Pieter Groenewald in a statement.

Groenewald was reacting to an article in the Beeld newspaper on Monday which reported that colonels and detectives were among 325 "unsuitable" North West police officials who would be redeployed to guard police station gates in April.

The order, which takes effect on Wednesday, was announced in a letter from the provincial police head office dated last Monday.

The North West police department hoped the measure would save it R700 000 a month.

The police officials concerned were those who could not carry firearms and had been found guilty of domestic violence, attempted murder or who had attempted to commit suicide.

Groenewald said if the officers were not desirable they should rather receive counselling or lose their jobs and not simply be re-deployed.

"If proper discipline is exercised and the necessary psychological counselling takes place, the public will get more value for their money.

"It is clear that senior managers do not have the capabilities to deal with this issue properly," said Groenewald.

It just goes to show how things are falling apart... Time for new leadership. This country has suffered enough under the current leadership. Start with the top cop and move down the ranks. Bring respect and honour back to the badge!

How to guard a Police station without a Gun...for Dummies. how do u do that?

  • Oom - 2012-04-02 20:03

this is such a joke, 3rd world de luxe

Any police officer who is not allowed to carry a firearm does not really sound fit to be in the police in the first place. Having these guys guard the police stations are the best idea ever. It gets these guys actually contributing in some way to the police service in the country and not just sitting around collecting a salary which is all paid for by us the taxpayer. Why should a security company be hired to guard a police station. That does not make any sense at all. That is the type of mentality tat is the whole reason for the police being so useless in general. They have forgotten what it is they are meant to be doing. Protecting and guarding the citizens of this country. If they start by guarding their stations then maybe some of them will start understanding this simple principle again and share it with the rest of the force and even apply this once they become fit again to be proper police officers that can carry a gun and protect the likes of you and me in our homes and businesses.

100% with you. Thanks for your open minded and unbiased input. I wish other people could see that way instead of just opposing everything that is done by the government.

      Oom - 2012-04-02 21:02

@pieter so you are happy seeing people drawing the salary of colonels while guarding gates. If they are not up to the job, they must be fired, and replaced by people who can do the job they are paid to do. Probably means firing half the police force though

      John - 2012-04-03 06:41

But remember Oom that hiring security companies to do the work for them costs them R700 000 more than getting the disqualified police officers to do something useful. I do not want those officers to patrol anywhere! "found guilty of domestic violence, attempted murder" Makes me wonder though about the ones that is better at hiding what they have done wrong,...

If my memory did not leave me, the employer has an obligation to give an employee work that fits the position of the employee, and vice versa.

Policemen found guilty of attempted murder protecting police stations from the public??? Shouldn't the police be protecting the public from policemen found guilty of attempted murder??

      Bianca - 2012-04-02 21:03

I was wondering the same thing. Why does having a criminal record not restrict one from attaining (or keeping, after having payed whatever was due for having committed the crime)a job in the police force? Especially when that crime was committed as a police officer, who has the training and knows the law, and who took an oath to uphold that law?

If I was a Police Captain for instance, and got assigned to guard duty, I would resign.

      matate.jafta - 2012-04-02 22:02

You can resign, if you employed to perfor other kind of duty it must be that way.

      DuToitCoetzee - 2012-04-02 22:51

If you, as a captain, cant do your job due to illness/disability and they can use you for training or admin and you refuse to do guard duty you must be send home or take you package. If you cant do guard duty as well they must board you. If you are not allowed to carry a gun, but they allow you to stay on and you cant do admin or training as well as refuse to do guard duty they must pay you out and send you home. You must have the right to take them on to prove that you could have done admin or training. If you are a captain and the police decide they can only keep you as a guard due to your own fault/record, but you refuse, they must also send you permanently home. I agree all options must be explored and all rights need to be reserved to prevent ill management, but if you are still at fault you should not have a choice although some rehabilitation can be allowed. This is nonsense that we sit with a situation where some people can still work, but cant be utilized where still see fit to contribute instead of sitting at home and receiving a salary. Saying all this I do realize that there will be cases that is not so clear cut. I think most public and maybe FF+ are jumping the gun. My gut feeling tells me that this pre-listing is to scare those loafers at home to decide to work because they do not want to do guard duty. I believe all are not loafers, but there will be some that will now think twice.

Does government employ people with criminal offences? According to the statement those Police Officers they comitted schudule one offences, so how on earth they must be re-deployed? The are South Africans who did provided service for more than ten years at Police Station gates being underpaid by Private Security Companies, why they were not given first preference? It is not diffucalt for government to take one step ahead to give them proper training if they really want to fight job creation issues. If it is possible for Police Officers to occupy the posts what will happen with the job losses of those who provide service for now? Really it is unfair to consider people who played with their chances.

The gate guards are then all unstable wife beating suicidal lunatics.
