ANC votes for the NEC

2012-12-19 14:35

ANC delegates have begun voting for the 80 member National Executive Committee at the University of the Free State. Watch.WATCH

Johannesburg - Ballot paper glitches delayed voting for the ANC national executive committee, the electoral commission said on Wednesday.

After it was fixed, voting "proceeded well", the electoral commission said in a statement.

"The delay... was as a result of an omission of one candidate, an incorrectly spelt name and a name that appeared twice."

The ballot paper was corrected and reprinted and the voting proceeded.

"Fortunately, the majority of the voting delegates who had initially cast their vote on the initial ballot paper returned.

"The speed at which the commission addressed the issues did not significantly delay the process."

The ANC is holding its elective conference at the University of Free State campus in Mangaung.

Delegates queued to vote for the rest of the NEC additional members on Wednesday.

The party earlier halted its plenary session because of an incoming storm. It resumed with proceedings in the early evening.

ANC secretary general Gwede Mantashe said the storm would not affect the conference.

The report-backs by policy commissions to plenary would be done at night.
