Cape Town - The ANC in the Western Cape failed to conclude its Provincial General Council (PGC) meeting at the weekend and take a position on party leadership, it was reported on Monday.

The PGC first met on Friday to endorse its preferred candidates for the ruling party's top six positions ahead of Mangaung but was hit by logistical delays, which included the verification of branch delegates by external auditors.

According to the Cape Times, the venue was changed for Saturday and delegates on their way home to places such as Beaufort West and George had to return to Cape Town for the rescheduled meeting at 6pm.

ANC Ward 95 delegate Andile Lile said the verification, accreditation and registration problems were overcome on Saturday night.

He said some council delegates appeared to deliberately delay the meeting by continuously raising points of order and posing questions about late delegates.

The meeting eventually started at about 03:00 on Sunday.

"When we did start at 03:00 the chairperson [Marius Fransman] had everybody leave the room and security check they were registered. We had to do this twice," Lili said.

The PGC hit another delay two hours after it started when hotel management told them the venue was needed for another function.

According to the report, the ANC national executive committee had to decide whether another provincial council should be called.
