Zille blames ANCYL for unrest

2012-08-30 20:43

Cape Town - Western Cape Premier Helen Zille on Thursday accused the ANC Youth League of fomenting unrest in the province.

"I have very little doubt that all of the violent disruption was directly linked to the ANC Youth League's call [to make the Western Cape ungovernable]," Zille told reporters in Cape Town, after the league marched in the city for better service delivery on Monday.

"And one of the clearest proofs of that is the day they said ok, we're not protesting, it all stopped, and when they pressed the on-button it all started again."

Zille said residents of poor areas had routinely told her they were visited and told to vandalise property.

She and others, including security agencies, had handed evidence to the police, but there was a reluctance to charge members of the league.

"There is a selective application of justice sometimes in this society.

"I don't think the president is going to say anything about the ANC Youth League in the run-up to Mangaung. I think a lot of this is about Mangaung, and obviously it is about 2014," she said referring to the ANC's elective conference and the next election year.

Zille said the league was trying to step into a leadership vacuum in the Western Cape, and targeting the Democratic Alliance administration to draw attention to itself.

"It is about the big internal battle in the ANC, and they can't make their name trying to fight each other, that's why they take on Zille. That's why they are marching. It's all about 2014 and all about Mangaung.

"And that is why Jacob Zuma won't rein in the ANC Youth League because he can only afford to alienate Julius Malema so much. He has lost the youth league."

Zille insisted she would not meet the youth league unless it withdrew its threat to make the province ungovernable.

"I have made it clear that as soon as the ANC Youth League withdraws its threats to make Cape Town ungovernable, I will come and meet them.

"If I go down and meet them... I'm saying you can threaten to make things ungovernable, you can stone buses, destroy traffic lights, you can burn things on railway lines, but that is fine... we can sit down and have a cozy chat."

Zille called the media briefing to rebut the league's allegations that the DA administration did not deliver to the poor.

"We take the taxpayers' money that we get and we redistribute it massively to the poor people."

She said the Western Cape government spent 71% of its education budget and 78% of its health budget on the poor.

In these two areas, its successes included slashing mother to child transmission of HIV to one percent, and the number of underperforming schools from 85% to 30% in two years.

      john.pope.75491 - 2012-08-31 12:30

I think that what Mrs Zille is saying makes good sense. Not just because I support her, but because it is VERY clear that there is division in the ANC and they are afraid of her logic. The ANC has so much at stake, they just have to resort to dirty tactics in order to look good. They will never look good in the Cape as long as they continue to score votes the way they are, with people’s lives and by withholding funds for the WCape, to make the DA look like they not doing a good job. ANC, jou vuur brand nader...!!

  • klaas.waarzegger.7 - 2012-08-30 20:55

There you have it. In a nutshell. You go girl!

  • SharonE - 2012-08-30 20:57

It just goes to show how brainless the youth league can be. The one province in the country that actually works, and that is why they want to destroy it. If it was run by the ANC, it would have been in the same condition as the rest of the country. Is that really what the youth league wants? Helen for president!

      arnold.niemand - 2012-08-30 21:12

Quite right, they cannot accept being shown up for the inept idiots they are and will do everything in their wanton destructive ways to reduce WC to the abysmal wrecks which the other provinces are.Hang in there Helen, sooner or later sanity will prevail and when the wheel starts turning it will gain momentum quickly.

      stirrer.stirrer - 2012-08-31 09:58

I've said it before, and I'm saying it again: It's high time for UDI (unilateral declaration of independence). The Western Cape will do a lot better without the burden of the rest of the country. Just put up a border post at Leeu Gamka. Beaufort West is ANC anyways, so no problem if they are locked out of the Republic of Good Hope. Helen for President!!!

  • duncan.gill1 - 2012-08-30 21:01

If the ANC cannot control and discipline its youth league then they better believe that someone else will do it and when that someone starts then they better shut up about it because their actions of doing nothing is criminal and should be brought to the international communities attention post haste. How much longer are we going to put up with this blatant disregard for the rule of law,how much longer are reasonable minded people in this country going to sit on their hands while the forces of hatred and disorder strut their stuff!

Its so unbeleivable what is happening to our country. How limited politics is , and the inadequacy of leadership to take us forward. Are we grooming more men and woman to lead this country like Helen Zille and where are they? still in school? Will we watch hopelessly as this country is run like a cash cow, until that cow is milked to empty!!! How long will we sit by and watch this country get wasted.

  • gnoise.prod - 2012-08-30 21:58

its amazing that the ANCYL dont protest for service delivery at the Luthuli House/ zumas office but they protest at the Hellen's offices one of the best administered province in the country

      ayub.sayed.750 - 2012-08-31 08:47

Well you blame the Luthuli house for service delivery why cant Zille be blamed for it in her province, dont be a hypocrit. Best administered province for who???? Camps bay reidents maybe.

      indianajohn - 2012-08-31 11:00

ayub, if you give your child a birthday present and he breaks it, do you immediately get him another one? Don't be stupid. Like Helen said the other day, R2 out of every R3 is spent on fixing vandalised property. How dare you, or anyone else, complain about service delivery when you destroy two thirds of it? It's pathetic and infantile.

The way its going now, a state of emergency is a stone throw away. I do not think the anc government is innocent in this regard. The lack of acting or saying anything is slowly adding fuel to the fire.

  • bryan.culross - 2012-08-30 22:19

I don't think they ANC or ANCYL really cares about delivery ... rather they see politics as a gr8 business opportunity ... u get urself into a good position in the ANC and that open up the possibilities for personal wealth ... either via cadre employment at an overpaid salary, alternatively, corruption opportnities via tenders et al

  • klaas.waarzegger.7 - 2012-08-30 22:57

Dear Unity. Yes they are grooming future leaders. They are the current members of the DA youth, a remarkable bunch of young individuals. Some are still at school, others on university and some already serve on Municipal Councils.

  • brionyl.french - 2012-08-31 05:26

ANCYL and ANC is responsible for all the unrest and unruly behaviour EVERYWHERE!!!! They should all be shot!

  • nigel.vanysendyk - 2012-08-31 07:42

ANCYL Scum, sit up & listen......71% of its education budget on poor black people & 78 % of WC health budget on the poor, dont come here with your lies, get out bloody agent !!!

  • harald.voney - 2012-08-31 08:01

Why don't they concentrate on all the other provences that are disfunctional... The WC isn't, and works very well for the poor. ANCYL are a bunch of Bumb, ignorant despots!

  • bobo.jane.1 - 2012-08-31 08:02

The DA produced its best results ever at the polls, scoring almost a million new voters to take its nationwide tally from 1,931,201 to just under 3,000,000, a growth of 50 per cent. This made it the only party in South Africa to have grown in all three of the most recent elections. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Democratic_Alliance_(South_Africa)

  • darryl.maze1 - 2012-08-31 09:00

Good for you Zillie. The ANCYL is nothing but a bunch of brainless corrupt idiots. Just shows you how stupid they are. W.C is the best and only province that is running well. The western cape government has built more house than all 8 provinces run by the ANC. Plus we are having to build more cause ppl are leaving those provinces because they can see the WC is working. The only reason why the ANCYL want to make the WC ungovernable is because everything works and they want to get there greasy KFC fingers on the money. Tony is still sour because he could not win the WC and that because he was beaten by a woman. The DA is working super hard to make everyone happy but ppl also need to give a hand at helping. If ppl can work together too it will make even a bigger difference. The ANCYL is just give give give, want want want, demand demand demand and not willing to work.

  • pws69 - 2012-08-31 09:01

"There is a selective application of justice sometimes in this society." If you are (ANC) connected, you are protected.

  • pws69 - 2012-08-31 09:13

I think it really irks the ANC and the ANCYL that the DA never stoop to their very low levels, and use the LEGAL and CONSTITUTIONAL tools afforded by a DEMOCRACY to sort out problems. Zille no doubt instituted the commission of enquiry into the police because said police are controlled by ANC deployed cronies, and they are doing their level best to undermine the DA.

  • godrick.mlambo - 2012-08-31 12:14
