Nelson Mandela in hospital

2013-03-28 13:33

Former president Nelson Mandela has been readmitted to hospital for a recurrence of a lung infection. Spokesperson Mac Maharaj has said that "Mandela is comfortable". WATCH

Johannesburg - President Jacob Zuma on Thursday said there was no need to panic after anti-apartheid icon Nelson Mandela was hospitalised for a recurrent lung infection.

Zuma told the BBC that the 94-year-old Mandela is "in good hands" and the "country must not panic".

Sapa reported the presidency as saying that Mandela was "responding positively" to treatment.

"The doctors advise that former president Nelson Mandela is responding positively to the treatment he is undergoing for a recurring lung infection," presidential spokesperson Mac Maharaj said in a statement.

Earlier, Maharaj said Mandela was conscious when he was taken to an undisclosed hospital just before midnight on Wednesday.

He said that given Mandela's age and medical history, doctors had acted with the greatest caution and responsibility, and had decided to send him to hospital.

"He is receiving treatment to deal with the infection and to keep him comfortable."

Maharaj said infections spread rapidly. Asked if this was the case with Mandela, he answered: "They always do."
