Cape Town - President Jacob Zuma’s State of the Nation speech was a fairly typical and predictable speech from the leader of an outgoing administration, political analyst Daniel Silke told News24 on Friday.

“There were very few surprises. There were very initiatives but in a sense the speech ticked all the boxes for Zuma and the ANC by concentrating on past successes, not only from the Jacob Zuma term of office but also from Zuma’s predecessors [Mbeki, Mandela, Motlanthe],” Silke said.

Silke said the SONA played into the ANC’s narrative going into the election.

While opposition party leaders such as Helen Zille criticised Zuma for using the speech as election speak, Silke said it was only natural that he would use address to extol the successes of the ANC.

Unfortunately, Zuma was unlikely to win over his detractors.
