Zuma tackles tensions

Johannesburg - President Jacob Zuma tackled tension in the ruling alliance and concern over the conduct of the ANC's national leadership during a political overview he presented to a meeting of the party's top brass on Friday.

"There's a serious concern in the NEC about the conduct of all of us," said ANC spokesperson Jackson Mthembu, who was on Thursday arrested for alleged drunk driving in Cape Town.

"Not only in the alliance but also in the ANC itself," he said on the steps of the venue in Kempton Park.

The meeting was set to conclude on Saturday with a press briefing to be held on Sunday.

ANC secretary general Gwede Mantashe was expected to present a report to the ANC's leadership on Saturday.

General council

This would, in the main, tackle the party's preparations for its September general council.

Zuma, who is also president of the ANC and Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe, who is also deputy president of the ANC, sat before the ANC's top brass clad in Bafana Bafana T-shirts.

The media was allowed in for photographs and video footage.

Earlier, ANC Youth League president Julius Malema stood outside deep in conversation with NEC member and Human Settlements Minister Tokyo Sexwale.

Malema then invited some passersby ogling him from afar to come closer. They responded enthusiastically by taking pictures of him.
