Johannesburg - President Jacob Zuma's comments earlier this year that any vote for another party was equivalent to voting for the devil was akin to voter intimidation, an opposition party leader said on Wednesday.
Speaking at the signing of the Electoral Code of Conduct in Midrand, Jake Maseka, president of the Movement Democratic Party said: "There are some intimidatory or threatening statements that if you vote for the opposition, you vote for the devil. These are intimidatory statements.
"And that if you vote ANC you vote for God. These are intimidatory statements."
He said such utterances should be discouraged. He urged Zuma and the ANC to look at the Bible.
"My advice to the author of those words, I would respectfully refer my brothers and sisters to Exodus chapter 20 verse 7."
He quoted the verse: "You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not leave him unpunished who takes His name in vain."
