'Repulsive' hardcore child porn

Johannesburg - A "large collection of shocking, hardcore child pornography" that horrified detectives, was found in the Randburg house of Leon van Nierop (47), South African media personality, movie critic and writer on Wednesday.

"I found the material repulsive"
Investigators from the Pretoria unit investigating family violence, child protection and sex crimes (FCS) found the pornography, "presented in its most extreme form", at Van Nierop's home after obtaining a search warrant earlier this week.

"I found the material repulsive," investigating officer Captain Gerrie Visser said.

The stomach-turning details of the pornography, to be classified this week by the Film and Publications Board in Cape Town, are known to Beeld - but may not be published.

Van Nierop (47) and his companion, Tascoe Luc de Reuck (27), former presenter of an SABC television crime programme, appeared on Monday in the Randburg Magistrates' Court on charges of the possession and importation of child pornography.

"As to what horror will emerge from the computers, no-one can say."
The two men were released on bail of R5 000 each.

Visser said police also seized four personal computers owned by Van Nierop. The machines' hard drives will be analysed by IT technicians.

"As to what horror will emerge from the computers, no-one can say. This is the second phase of the investigation and we will be able to establish which Internet sites have been visited."

He said the information on Van Nierop's computers could lead police to further suspects.

Transactions performed on Van Nierop's credit card will also come under scrutiny. He allegedly used the card to order, via the Internet, a package which was later intercepted by police. It contained video tapes and a CD-Rom from Asia.

Visser said that although Van Nierop alleges that access to pornographic websites was obtained without his knowledge, "he must still explain how, after three years, he did not know about the collection of child pornography that was found inside his house".

Van Nierop and companion De Reuck have been living together for three years.
