Cape Town - News24 journalists were warned to stay away from Du Noon township near Milnerton outside Cape Town on Friday morning, as policemen said "shots were being fired".
The atmosphere was increasingly volatile following attacks on foreigners on Thursday night after a community meeting.
Six were reportedly injured.
Streams of men, women and children were seen walking with their
possessions along the N7 on Friday morning, away from the township looking for safety.
About 500 foreigners were taken to nearby Killarney Racetrack on
Thursday night.
"We're moving them to community halls because the rain is coming
tonight," said City of Cape Town housing official, Steve Hayward as he directed more people coming into the racetrack.
A road in Khayelitsha was closed as foreigners within the township left and waited at the side of the road for help - the few possessions they could carry, held in their hands.
About 300 people were waiting on Durban road in Bellville. "Disaster risk management is going to take them to Richmond Hall," said Hayward.
Richmond is one of two halls providing food, shelter and blankets to the hundreds fleeing the violence.
