Cape Town - Hacker group has defended its actions as a legitimate political protest and hinted that it will conduct more cyber attack activities.

The group, calling itself Africa Anonymous, took down the IOL website on Wednesday, followed by the Zimbabwean newspaper site, the Herald on Thursday and the ANC's page on Friday.

The group took down the ANC website with a DDOS (Distributed denial of service) attack.

This attack overwhelms servers with a barrage of requests that causes the equipment to fail. The strategy relies of several computers under control of the hacker, known as a botnet.

Africa Anonymous said it was ideologically motivated.

"People emailing us to pay us to hit not corrupt targets, please stop, we do not do this for money, we are not your weapon to be bought," the group tweeted under the username, ?@zim4thewin.

"Our targets are corrupt politicians, and especially those who support mugabe, not random political parties," the group added.

History

The group ended its attack of the ANC website on Friday afternoon, tweeting: "@MyANC_ u will get your website back in a min. hope you reflected on your choice to support a person who killed 20 000 ndebele."

This tweet references the deaths of between 20 000 to 80 000 civilians who supported Joshua Nkomo in Matabeleland by Mugabe forces in the 1980s.

The ANC said that regarded Zanu-PF as a friend as both organisations shared a common history.

"There are things that Zanu has done that we do not agree with, but to the extent that we have shared trenches with them, we regard them as a fraternal organisation," spokesperson Keith Khoza told News24.

Africa Anonymous warned that imposters were targeting South African political websites.

"@Not4TheWin is ddosing a website called http://da.org.za  and claiming to be part of anonafrica. they are not, they are not us #fakers."

The group hinted that would attack Swaziland next, and had amassed 597 Twitter followers by early Friday afternoon.
