Cape Town - Apple distributor Core Group has announced the retail price for the Apple TV in South Africa.

The small device allows for streaming of web content to a TV and while the device has enjoyed some popularity in developed markets with high cable broadband penetration, it may struggle in SA, where there are less less than a million cable broadband internet subscribers.

Core announced that the device will retail for R1 099 and go on sale from Friday, but was quick to add that retailers were free to determine their own price.

"Resellers are responsible for determining their own prices for the resale of products. Although Core Group may suggest retail
prices, these are suggestions only and resellers are entirely free to determine the actual prices at which products will be sold," Core said.

According to Apple, movie rentals will start at R19.99 per month and will be available when content is released on DVD. Users have 30 days to begin watching, and once started, the movie can be watched an unlimited number of times in two days.

The Apple TV box may face tough competition from DStv's PVR movie rental offer which doesn't require an internet connection.
