Cape Town - University researchers have developed an application that lets Apple applications run on Android-powered smartphones.

According to a report on the BBC, the researchers, from Columbia University developed at app called Cider which lets iOS apps run on smartphones powered by Google's Android operating system.

They were careful to point out that the platform is not perfect and have no commercial plans, but the project demonstrates that the device may become less important as interoperability grows.

In theory, Cider on a device would allow someone to run applications from either ecosystem though serious challenges like access to payment gateways and Flash-based content remain.

Nokia is about to launch its X-series on smartphones in South Africa which run a heavily customised version of Android and a number of companies are investigating the commercial viability of smartphones as virtual machines.

Billionaire Mark Shuttleworth is working to develop the Ubuntu smartphone which is expected to run both Android as well as Ubuntu, though a crowd funding exercise failed.
