Johannesburg - Applications are critical to the success of a mobile platform, and for the BlackBerry 10 ecosystem in particular, as it has just launched.
"The ecosystem is what makes the platform scalable and successful, and that's why we've put so much focus in ensuring that at launch we have 70 000 apps," Alexandra Zagury, BlackBerry managing director for South Africa and Southern Africa told News24 at the launch of BlackBerry 10.
BlackBerry, formerly known as Research In Motion, has focused itself on building a strong ecosystem of applications and content prior to the launch.
"Hopefully, you would have seen today the roster of big brand names - all the top apps that have joined us just to start in the BlackBerry journey," Zagury added.
In addition to working with developers, the company held a series of BlackBerry Jams sessions, with around 200 attending a recent one in Cape Town.
Applications
"The work we've done with developers and content and alliance partners throughout the globe has been absolutely phenomenal," said Zagury.
The BlackBerry 10 is poised to re-energise the company that has been under pressure from iPhones and Android-powered devices in developed markets.
The company announced Alicia Keys as Global Creative Director and in South Africa, a range of popular applications.
Some applications available on BlackBerry 10 include Facebook, Angry Birds, Where's My Water, AccuWeather and Skype.
24.com announced its BlackBerry 10 News24 application that focused on multimedia content delivery.
"In terms of audience engagement, BlackBerry devices far outstrip any other mobile or tablet platforms," said Geoff Cohen, CEO of 24.com at the launch.
Perceptions
"From launch, BB 10 users will be able to download the SuperSport apps and sport fans out there will be able to get the latest sports news, blogs and fixtures.
"The DStv application will provide TV lovers with all their guide information they require, as well getting all the celebrity and entertainment, gossip and news," said DStv mobile CEO Mark Rayner.
The company is looking to change perceptions that BlackBerry is a previous generation device with video calling in BBM (BlackBerry Messenger) as well as features like Screen Share.
"You can install multiple applications simultaneously, and there's no need to reboot your device," said BlackBerry vice president of Global Alliances and Business Development, Martyn Mallick.
