Cape Town - A Cape Town student has won a job at an internet giant for an idea that exploits mobile technology.

Shikoh Gitau was hired by Google after she developed a computer program that helps South Africans with job hunting on mobile devices, Beeld reported.

The University of Cape Town student developed mobile program, dubbed Ummeli, that searches for jobs and allows users to upload their CVs.

"The idea is to give people from particularly poor areas with limited access to computers the opportunity to get jobs with cellphones," said Gitau.

The information is sent to prospective employers in a PDF format.

The program has around 150 000 users and is available from the Vodacom website.
