Cape Town - Action capture cameras have become the weekend adventurer's plaything, but are these toys useful or just for posers?

The Drift HD Ghost camera hopes to be your alternative adventure recorder and it sports a robust design for the inevitable thrills and spills of the weekend warrior.

The camera has a big lens relative to its size and it captures video in high definition. The wide angle lens also makes it fairly idiot-proof and there is the additional benefit that you’re unlikely to miss the money shot.

It also creates the illusion that the action is happening slightly faster than in reality, but it makes for a compelling video, even if you just went cycling around the block.

One downside of the robust design is that the controlling the device is less than ideal. The rubber-encased buttons ensure that no water gets into the camera, but they require a heavy press to work and there is a fear that after a couple of years, the functionality may be reduced.

On the other hand though, the Ghost camera does come with a remote control which helps, but it may not always be practical to have the remote handy when you're engaging in adventurous activities.

The camera ships with two back covers that both screw on tightly to ensure a water-tight seal – one conveniently has two caps for the USB connector cable and micro-SD card cover.

The basic software has simple controls to record and play video, take pictures and a neat time lapse mode. There is no onboard memory and you’ll have to supply you own SD card to record any content.

The indicator light is also colour coded so that you immediately know is which mode the Ghost camera is – it also saves battery power in standby mode.

Viewing your action videos is easy on the 6cm LCD and the sound production is pretty decent from the integrated speaker

Unfortunately, there is no noise cancelling on the microphone so you’ll hear a bit more wind noise that you’d like. This can be particularly annoying if you are surfing or paragliding.

What makes the Ghost camera useful though is its range of accessories and it's got an attachment clip for every kind of adventure.

The Drift HD Ghost camera is available for purchase at various stockists nationwide and comes in at slightly cheaper than the GoPro. The device has a recommended retail price of R4 650.

The camera is prepared to accompany you on your next adventure - like it says on the box: "Get out there."
