Cape Town – According to a report by Digital Trends, popular cross platform instant messaging app WhatsApp, could possibly be acquired by Google.

The deal started four or five weeks ago, and according to an inside source WhatsApp is “playing hardball” and jockeying for a higher acquisition price, which currently is “close to” $1bn right now.

There are rumours that Google Babble will combine Google’s disparate communication services under one roof, but the platform still needs to do something to innovate in this space.

Last year in December there was also rumours that Facebook was negotiating a deal to buy WhatsApp. But very few details about the matter was available.

WhatsApp was launched in 2009 and allows users to send each other text, image, video and audio messages. It works across Android, iPhone, Blackberry, Windows Phone and Symbian platforms and does not charge a fee per message.
