Cape Town - A new package targeting international travellers who want the convenience of retaining their number, but want to avoid data roaming charges has been launched.

The Uncapped Roaming Data plan from execMobile offers uncapped data usage for R349 per day of international travel.

"We’ve had a lot of interest in an uncapped product from our corporate clients who are looking for a fixed cost product that removes the cost uncertainty for executives using large amounts of data when travelling abroad," said Craig Lowe, execMobile founder.

The package offers a R99 per month subscription for a PocketWifi device that allows up to five devices to be connected simultaneously.

While data rates in SA have come down significantly, international rates remain expensive.

Vodacom charges R128 per MB for data in the US and R17.50 in the UK. Data costs in Europe on MTN are R2.70 per 25KB, and Cell C advises its customers to switch off data when roaming.

Data in the US on Cell C ranges from R9.41 to R141.20 per MB and up to R199.33 in the UK.

Some mobile users elect to buy a SIM card in a foreign country to reduce costs or only make use of Wi-Fi where it is available.

"Given that the average international data cost of around R100 per MB, Unlimited is extremely well priced to reduce the cost of employees’ data when travelling. The daily cost equates to only 3MB of data at current roaming rates," execMobile said.

Coverage for the package is available in 110 countries, including 14 African and seven Middle East destinations.

Lowe said that travellers can avoid the subscription cost altogether.

"Our Global alternative is also a post-paid option; travellers pay R7.99/MB, with no subscription rate. This is 90% cheaper than the standard international data rate and employees are only billed for the data used, offering them the flexibility to use corporate infrastructure or other alternatives abroad," he said.
