Cape Town - Classifieds provider Junk Mail has won the International Classifieds Media Association (ICMA) Innovation Award for its Junk Mail X platform.

"Junk Mail was the only company outside of Europe listed amongst the eight finalists in the ICMA Innovation Awards, with the organisation counting more than 70 companies from 32 countries in its ranks," said Felix Erken, Junk Mail managing director.

The online platform has success in urban areas of SA and the X platform is particularly targeted at mobile users who may not have access to a computer.

According to a report titled Internet Matters by World Wide Worx and commissioned by Google, 63 million SIM cards are in use in SA, though the report was careful to point out that a significant percentage was the result of dual SIM use.

The statistic is indicative of the reach of mobile phones as the primary device used by the majority of South Africans to access the internet and conduct online purchases.

"The Junk Mail X platform has seen almost 10 million downloads with classified listings and responses to classifieds running into the hundreds of thousands every month," Junk Mail said.

The company also recently launched a platform to target users on the Mxit social network.

The Junk Mail Xchange (JMX), has seen healthy user adoption, with over 30 000 ads per week being placed, the company said recently.

"Junk Mail X is an excellent demonstration of the power and reach of the mobile and it's so wonderful to see Junk Mail's integration of mobile into their print and web strategies being recognised and rewarded," said Sarah Rice, vice president of communications at Mxit.

Junk Mail indicated that it was looking to expand into Nigeria, regarded as a key African market.

"We'll be looking at taking the Junk Mail X platform into Africa with Mxit in the near future with Nigeria likely to be our first market as we already have a presence there and it's a key market within the African context," said Erken.
