Cologne - Press, swipe and touch: kitchen appliances with a touchpad are a big trend this year.
Consumers got a flavour of what's on offer at this year's Living Kitchen show at the International furniture Fair IMM in Cologne. New touchpad devices for the kitchen include ovens and induction cookers.
"The touch-sensitive philosophy has changed our appliances a lot," says Andreas Enslin, director of the design centre at Miele, the German-based international brand.
Touch-sensitive displays have become popular thanks to smart phones.
Consumers have developed a new need for intuitive ways to use kitchen appliances, Enslin says. In order to make using the technology as easy as possible designers have come up with an overarching concept: once customers understand one appliance, they will understand all if every appliance follows the same system.
Kitchen appliance manufacturer Gaggenau offers a combination of traditional analogue and touchpad keys.
The main functions are determined using a normal cooker knob, but its settings can be monitored on a liquid crystal display. More functions can be set if needed via the display and are only visible there.
