Cape Town - MTN has re-introduced its Thursday promotion to reduce the cost of mobile phone calls.

The Mahala Thursday promotion allows subscribers to receive an additional 50% of the airtime value they load on their account on Thursdays.

"Every Thursday, MTN Prepaid and TopUp customers who recharge their airtime balance with a minimum of R10 automatically receive an additional 50% of the value loaded on their account," MTN said.

To qualify for the promotion, customers need to load a minimum of R10 on their MTN account on Thursday and transfers via Me2U do not qualify.

Mobile operators are seeing an increase in data use and MTN and Vodacom have moved to launch Long Term Evolution (LTE) higher speed networks to cater to customers who demand rich media on mobile devices.

While MTN has over 180 million subscribers globally, the operator is determined to make inroads into Vodacom's lead in SA.

"In South Africa we've got some work to do; we're not comfortable being number two, we have an active plan to take market share from Vodacom. We're busy executing that plan and we're starting to see some rewards on that now," Mike Fairon, general manager of product, services and innovation at MTN told News24.

The free airtime cannot be used to make calls to devices on other networks, and expires on the same day, MTN said.
