Cape Town - Mxit users can download the first feature length film on the social network from Monday, the company announced.

The movie A Lucky Man, about gang boss Ernie 'Lastig' Solomon is available for download on the social network with an estimated 50 million registered users.

The movie has been broken up into short episodes of around four minutes each and users can download them via the Cinemo app.

"Cinemo has three content streams. It has movies, of which A Lucky Man is the first, public service announcements on issues such as condom use, and music videos like Freshly Ground's popular Take me to the dance," said Marlon Parker, vice president of Mxit Reach.

The app has been designed for feature phones which dominate South Africa's mobile market and the files are compressed to ensure that they are smaller than 2MB.

Mxit has linked the movie with links to counselling about drug abuse as viewers follow the life of Solomon in his search for identity in a crime-filled environment.

"With one click a user can go from a conversation about drug abuse to the Angel Network, our anonymous drug counselling service," said Parker.

Mxit said the Cinemo app has earned over 90 000 subscribers since its launch in January.
