Cape Town - Nokia announced on Tuesday the launch of its latest smartphone as the company strives to reign in the user migration to Android-powered devices.

The Nokia Lumia 925 is based on the 920 smartphone, but the new device has a metal rim and a plastic back cover in a smartphone that features the Nokia PureView camera.

The 8.7 megapixel main camera may seem like an under performer when compared to the cameras on the Samsung Galaxy S4 and Xperia Z, but Nokia has a reputation of using intelligent image stabilisation technology to produce crisp images.

There are only soft buttons on the face and the volume rocker, power and camera switches are recessed on the side of the body.

"The Nokia Lumia 925 also introduces the new Nokia Smart Camera mode, coming as an update to all Lumia Windows Phone 8 smartphones," Nokia said.

The camera mode allows a user to capture and edit 10 different images at once and choose ones. As expected from top-end phones, the content can be quickly uploaded to social networks Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Tumblr, though not Google+.

Users can expect a minimum of 16GB onboard memory and Microsoft also offers an extra 7GB of Sky Drive storage online.

The Lumia 925 has an 11.4cm display protected by Gorilla Glass and it is powered by a 1.5GHz dual-core Snapdragon processor with 1GB of RAM.

Nokia will introduce the device in Europe on Vodafone, and local pricing and availability will be announced shortly.
