Cape Town - Nokia is rolling out an update for its Windows Phone 8 smartphones expected to increase the functionality of the devices.

On Thursday, the manufacturer announced an Amber update for Lumia devices running the Windows Phone 8 operating system.

"Lumia Amber builds on the latest update for Windows Phone 8 from Microsoft. In itself, this provides a number of significant additions, including a new FM radio player and improvements to the Internet Explorer browser as well as other exciting updates," Nokia said.

Maps and photography make up the lion's share of the update and the Lumia 920 will allow ISO setting adjustments on the camera from 800 to 3 200.

Video tools are also included in the update that should permit users to edit clips on the phone.

The Glance feature will display the clock on the screen when the device is inactive and the phone can be tapped to activate it, as opposed to using the unlock key.

Nokia warned that updates take some time to filter through and users can also check for the update availability by going to he Settings menu.

"Exact delivery timings will vary by phone and operator, but we expect the update to reach Lumia 520, Lumia 620, Lumia 720, Lumia 820 or Lumia 920 by the end of September," Nokia said.

Some features in the update may not be functional on lower specification Nokia devices like the Lumia 520.

Gartner research found that the Windows Phone OS overtook BlackBerry as the third most popular platform, capturing 3.3% of the global market.
