Cape Town - A new service has been launched that is expected to make sending mobile airtime to friends and family abroad easier.

Orange has launched an online tool that enables residents of South Africa, for example, to send airtime credit to people in 105 countries, including neighbouring states Zimbabwe and Mozambique, but also the US, Canada, and India.

You simply open the online application and input the recipient's phone number.

Orange says that the service accepts South African credit cards and that fees are clearly identified when people use the service. You may also top-up in a range of currencies.

The service is useful particularly to citizens of foreign countries in SA who may be more easily able to send airtime credit to family members back home.

While the service is limited to airtime credit, the principle could well also apply to digital products and services bought in foreign countries or borderless online stores.

Orange is based in France and has a presence in Switzerland, the UK, Spain and several African countries.
