Cape Town - Soccer fans will soon have access to real-time information on Premier Soccer League (PSL), Mxit announced on Thursday.

The social network has partnered with sports match analysis company Amisco Group to provide the data to PSL fans.

"All 16 PSL teams will have a community on Mxit, with national teams Bafana Bafana and Bayana Bayana being added in the coming months," Mxit said.

The company hopes that soccer fans will login to the social network to consume data from matches like shots on goal, corner kicks, yellow cards as well as an analysis of strategy by teams.

"For true fans the experience is not limited to the 90 minutes that the match is physically being played. There are hours of analysis of the players, the strategies, the opposing team's ability to compete before the match and then there is the post-game deconstruction of what happened and what impact it has on the rest of the season," said Ryan Paterson, regional head of the Amisco Group for Africa.

Despite the growth of smartphones in SA, Mxit, which has its roots in basic phones, still enjoys a healthy user base.

"Mobile remains the dominant platform for Africa. The call within that is - smartphone or feature phone? Android or Apple? Mxit has the view that features phones are going to get smarter and Android will be the dominant smartphone operating system of the future. This is reflected in our development, where almost all our energy is funnelled into Java and Android," Mxit chief marketing officer Vincent Maher chatted to News24.

The application can be found in the sport section of the Mxit platform and is a free download.
