San Juan - Construction of a $36m solar park in Puerto Rico has begun as the island seeks to reduce its dependence on petroleum.

The solar park is being built in the southern town of Salinas by Miami-based Yarotek and Sonnedix, whose headquarters are based in London and Miami. The groundbreaking ceremony was on Wednesday.

Officials said the solar park is expected to initially generate enough energy for 2 500 households. Both companies have pledged to develop two other bigger solar projects in the northern coastal town of Isabela and in the south-eastern town of Yabucoa.

Puerto Rico also will soon be the site of the Caribbean's largest wind farm and largest solar energy project, both being built in the island's southern region.
